I have noticed on some reviews about the First Edition Prime toy line and they are great. But I have a question as to why some of the characters never got a First Edition release, characters like: Ratchet, Wheeljack, Soundwave, Skyquake. Heck, Cliff even got a Terrorcon FE release.

I think Wheeljack and Skyquake probably didn't because they weren't a part of the first season. (This is all going off memory)

As far as I know I own a First Edition Soundwave, but maybe its actually the Robots in Disguise version, and I thought Ratchet did get one.

Wheeljack appeared in episode 7 Con Job, Skyquake in episode 6 Masters and Students. But Cliff died 5 mins into the show

Soundwave would be RID version as there was no FE, also no FE for Ratchet.

"There were initial plans to release a small assortment of three Deluxe figures (Bumblebee (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Bumblebee_%28WFC%29/toys), Arcee (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Arcee_%28WFC%29) and Starscream (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Starscream_%28WFC%29)) in the Generations (http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Transformers:_Generations) line before they were moved into the expanded "First Edition" launch line."

As pandaprime said, they just weren't part of the first wave.

Cliffjumper also had a regular FE release as well as the Terrorcon version.

Didn't Wave 2 only have deluxe Terrorcon CJ and Vehicon?? and there was no Wave 2 voyagers :(

Was it? My bad. It's all a blur now. I didn't get Terrorcon CJ and ended up ebaying the Vehicon.

When Hasbro originally planned FIRST EDITION is was a concept similar to "Movie Preview" toys they did with the first 3 Bay movies.

Just like how we never got anything more of protoforms out of Prime/Starscream from Movie 1, the same is said here

The thing is that FIRST EDITION was also planned as a promotional gimmick for the Japan release of the toys before the full on Arms Micron concept would go into pass (Think like how we went "RID" for our Prime toys after First Edition)

The odd part about this whole story is all these plans and in the end Canada's TRU ended up being the only game in town due to a lot of distribution mistakes, and when the error was fixed, the last wave of First Edition was zapped. Japan on the other hand got all releases (with minor color changes)

Long story short. First Edition was a early promo concept that didn't go as planned and it's why a lot of characters didn't releases because the line was never meant to be long lived, just a quick burst (See Megatron for one who no one can argue ain't a "Season 1 or early episode" character)
