Turn and face the train (Astrotra-tra-trainges)....No this isn't an episode dedicated to Bowie parodies but a look at the parallels between Transformers and music, both modern and classics. We also cover our favourite Generation 1 animation error...and with so many, it was hard to pick one! For our getting to know topic we cover ol' timer and weapon specialist Ironhide and his huge history over 26 years. Finally, a healthy dose of what the hell were they thinking when they decided to make Forest Battle Optimus Prime?!

Episode 27 - Triple cha cha cha cha changers (http://www.cybertron.ca/podcast/Canadian%20Slag%2027%20-%20Triple%20cha%20cha%20cha%20cha%20changers.mp3)

Woo-Hoo!!! More me!!!

Thanks guys. Loved the music segment.

New suggestions:
-favorite US Marvel G1 comic issue discussion (or can be broken down Top 10, and 1 issue done per episode as time filler)
-favorite UK Marvel G1 comic issue
-favorite ugly color scheme on a toy (any toyline)
-favorite BW verbal joust (in an episode)
-favorite KO in your collection (and/or overall)
-Episode Discussion: Decepticon in King Arthur's Court
-Toy subgroup Discussion: Micromasters, G2 GoBots/Spychangers, G2 Cyberjets, BW Mutant Beasts
-Getting to Know: Dead End, Dirge, Ransack

Possible fun topics:
[ripping off the Star Wars cookbook I saw in a store once]
1. making of a "Transformers Cookbook" (Cerebros Cherrios, Powerglide Poptarts, Thunder Crackers, Warpath Waffles, Quintesson Qookies, Inferno Hot Sauce, Brawn Brownies, Predaking Pie, etc)

2. odd TF merchandise that was never made (and probably never will)...back scratcher, shoe horn, coat hangers, desks, puppets, etc....in contrast to stuff that was released, like bubble bath, party hats, toothbrush, pencils, shoes, belt buckle, etc.
(I guess some of the released stuff can go under the "What the Hell Were They Thinking?" segment as well)

Yeah, some ideas are better than others.

Another informative and entertaining episode, guys. So you're asking for suggestions? Well to be honest I just hope you keep doing what you're doing because Canadian Slag has been a solid podcast all round.

If anything, I'd like to see (hear?) a getting to know about everyone's favorite mineralogist, Swerve. The G1 minibot was my very first transformer (and I still have in my collection) and is that one character that I just have to collect every toy that bears his name.
It would be interesting to hear how he went from a pickup to a corvette and sports car (I swear that Universe 1.0 was meant to be Lightspeed but Hasbro couldn't get the name). We could learn more about the enigma that is the Aveo Swerve that was released as a promotional item and laugh the whole time about his short and painful appearance in the G1 cartoon.:)

Otherwise keep up the great work and just don't forget to enjoy yourselves. I know that if you guys weren't having fun making these podcasts I wouldn't be having fun listening to them.;)

Great ep guys,

A few questions:
It is nice that the transformers are becoming more iconic in popular culture and music in general, but it seems like the Hiphop and Rap genres have really embraced the Transformers with big names like Chris Brown, L'il Wayne and Wu Tang clan leading the way. What are your thoughts surrounding Transformers and Hip Hop?

Also, animated errors are always a fun topic as there are so many errors to chose from. My fav is from the Animated movie when Devastator hit Sludge in the back and his eye balls fly out of his head like some Bugs Bunny cartoon.

And for the record, Call of the Primitives is one of the best animated Transformers shows ever imo; too bad the story is kinda weak.

All in all, great work once again!

The prevalence of transformers references in rap and hip-hop is most likely due to numerous, complex reasons. Among them is likely the fact that rap/hip-hop is in its current incarnation a relatively new medium. Thus it draws on a more modern cultural and referential basis than in other genres. Basically, the "newness" of urban rap/hip-hop could lead to a larger capacity for the adoption of surrounding cultural trends and motifs, whereas other genres have at this point already established their own recurring themes, reference points, and lyrical trends. The willingness to draw from other cultural points such as other, often seemingly contradictory musical genres, historical and political events and commentaries, and even other mediums, such as kung fu movies, is readily seen in rap and hip hop, and is arguably one of its greatest strengths.

It could also be that due to the more lyrical nature of the genre, as opposed to a more melodic nature, that to evoke response, it becomes more important to draw upon more concrete concepts, rather than emotional melodies. To do so, the artists, many of whom are young males (again, tying back into the newness of the genre) utilize what they feel is a universal cultural foundation for others like them, which itself is built on a zeitgeist that includes transformers.

Or maybe they, like us, just think transformers are cool and that dropping a shout-out to transformers in their songs sounds good. I have no idea.

And what makes you think the jumping eyes were an animation error? Maybe they meant to do them like that. =P

I'm pretty sure Jean's father from Victory is everyone's favorite TF mineralogist, as Swerve is a metallurgist. I don't even know if he's everyone's favorite, since Perceptor is also a metallurgist. But yeah, Swerve would be pretty cool to cover.

Here's a link to Transform Higher:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn3Z-9qBjOU

I've always thought Shania Twain was a Transformers fan. First she's got that song "Don't Impress Me Much" in which she askes if "you got the Touch?". Then there's her video for "Gonna Get Ya" she's chased by a giant robot, that actually transforms, on a planet similar looking to Cybertron inhabited by other robots.

"Getting anal with Ironhide" made me LOL so hard! XD

BTW, does anyone have a pic of "the lady in purple"?

Darn it, you're right! I knew "mineralogist" didn't sound like the right word.:o But I still stand by my statement that Swerve is everyone's favorite whatever he is! Seriously, screw Perceptor.:p

Hmm...I'm not sure if the word you are looking for is newness, but I think I get what you are saying. And I would agree that much of the Hip Hop culture is derived from popular media of the time. Hence Chris Brown's song was released around the time of the movie and while it doesn't mean that Brown is a big fan per-se, it just means he likes money, which probably isn't far off.

But I think that in some cases The Transformers brand appeals to a wider array of cultures than other brands of the 80's like He-Man or GI Joe, because Robots aren't race specific. I can't think of a North American Cartoon, aimed at boys that didn't have a main character that was not White. Sure, in the G1 series the supporting characters were white, but the Main guys, the Autobots and Decepticons weren't specific and it stands to reason that younger boys of different cultural background would relate better to characters are like (or could be like) them. This could be also a reason why this property is one of the few properties that is both popular in Japan and North America.

And what makes you think the jumping eyes were an animation error? Maybe they meant to do them like that. =P

Sure and maybe the Skinny seeker was suppose to be a girl. ;)

Will.I.Am. is Destro. Fergie is the Baroness. And I can't help but be reminded of the Michigan City battle when I look at the city. Oh, and there's giant robots too.

GMfan
03-09-2010, 02:51 AM
I would say so, it has a very "Mission City" feel and the legs of the white robot seem very similar to Optimus's legs if you removed the wheels, colours, and rounded them off. As for the get ups and guns....probably Joe, wouldn't claim to be an authority on that as GI Joe is oblivious to me :P

One of my fav animation errors is in the G1 movie. When we see Rewind and Eject for first time. There colours alternated between blue and black or black and blue depending on which one.

The Forest Battle Optimus Prime is a prefect toy to combine with Jetfire. OP was damage when he combined so it works for me. The issues with the colours on the legs and kible might be fixe in the production toy. remember what we sawcould be a mock-up.

The forums are extended gutters and the gutters are full of piss and vinegar and when the drains finally scab over, all the repaint haters will drown. The accumulated filth of all their TF reproduction theories and FIRRIB will foam up about their waists and the bitter and haters will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."

:P

One of my fav animation errors is in the G1 movie. When we see Rewind and Eject for first time. There colours alternated between blue and black or black and blue depending on which one.

The Forest Battle Optimus Prime is a prefect toy to combine with Jetfire. OP was damage when he combined so it works for me. The issues with the colours on the legs and kible might be fixe in the production toy. remember what we sawcould be a mock-up.

Don't forget Soundwave ejecting 2 Rumbles :P

I think the only reason I still couldn't get the Forest battle Optimus working for Jet Prime would be because he never used the hooks, didn't have a face tumor, and had the face plate up the whole time. But hey if it works for ya get it, I do see an advantage to getting it if you want him combined and have the first release standing alone. As a display freak I get that ;)

but yes staying on topic...

"ZOMG WHO IS CYCLONUS?" :O

lol favourite error ever because it actually caused such a contraversy.

For me it's always been Cyclonus was Skywarp, and Scourge was Thundercracker. Mainly because Skywarp was often put in charge by Megatron to watch over Starscream.

I love it when we get new characters based on misconceptions and animation errors. It somehow makes the G1 universe feel more expansive to me. It also means that we fans can feel like we have a little hand in the creation of new characters and toys. :D

Everything is expansive with just a little imaaaaginaaaation.....where's that damn Figment from Epcot?

lol well personally I don't care who turned into "Cyclonus". Fact is he now exists and whoever he was made from doesn't anymore XD

Agreed.I personally don't care who is who.In my view,Cyclonus is an entirely different character, along with Scourge and Galvatron,it does not matter who they were in the past, they were there for the rest of G1 and they stayed there.

As for the animation errors, these are one of the last reasons why I couldn't watch G1 for a good amount of time.I remember watching the first four episodes and noticing the miscoloured errors here and there,as well as the scale errors going on in the rest of the episodes.

Also, since were talking about the Fandom and their sometimes exaggerated theories(Where a percentage of them are official or homaged),it's really aggravating that Fans do this based on one simple animation error. It's fun to analyze sometimes, but this is over-analyzing.I never knew fans can be this severe...which reminds me that I am extremely thankful for being a casual fan...but still calls things contrary to the Fandom, such as calling the Predacon ship in Beast Wars...the Predacon ship,I refuse to call it the Darksyde.

I was just re-listening to this episode, on iTunes(yay!), and got to the part about Magnaboss. I like to think the Ironhide, Prowl, and Silverbolt from Magnaboss are the G1 characters. Just rebuilt into Maximals.

To me the Silverbolt in the cartoon, is a different character with the same name. His memory banks were damaged and whatnot. The guy couldn't even remember he was a Maximal. So maybe he was a friend of Silverbolt pre-BW, and could just remembered his name and assumed that that was his own name. I like to think he's one of the other Arielbots, like Slingshot.

Owl Prowl I recall reading that he is actually Binaltech Prowl who traveled back in time. Why not? We had 2 Ravages in Binaltech anyway.

I was hoping this was gonna be a triple changer epi, so I was a little disapointed to find the music angle instead. Any chance of a triple changer-centric show in the future?

This I can agree with.

2 Ravages in Binaltech? Pretty sure Jag Ravage never made it to the land of the rising sun.

The power of 3? Should that include trio-cons too? :P

There aren't many triple changers out there...but it can be done ;)

What about a show about Bots with multiple Alt modes then to add some filler. Everything from Blitzwing to Metroplex to Sixshot could then be discussued.

ehhh good theory.....the whole Prowl 2 this - IMO - could just be prowl's memories being given to a new body after magnaboss Prowl. That or Hasbro are morons and named this guy prowl forgetting there was a Prowl already XD

The moron was actual Takara. Back in 1987 when Headmasters was being produced, Japan didn't get the 1986 (not till 1991, after Victory). So some of the writers/animators were not aware of Prowl's death (same goes for Wheeljack in Victory). It would not be till YEARS later that Takara would try to fix the mistake with the creation of Binaltech Prowl and his pack-in story. The whole 2 Prowls in Beast Wars was for keeping the licensing, much like how there is 2 Razorclaws in Beast Wars also.

i wouldnt say that they made it big, but they did gather a following i guess. they've since changed their name to "love you to death" and are still together.
