GMfan

Protoman has given Cybertron.ca images from Gamestop's Game Informer magazine of the next Transformers video game, War on Cybertron. This game features new designs reminiscent of War Within, Classics figures, and the Michael Bay Movie characters.

Produced by Activision expect to see this game sometime in 2010. Is this what the next new series for Transformers will be or a stand alone game? Time shall tell, till then, enjoy the preview!

Megatron's design is too jagged and pointy. Not as bad as the movie design, but still a bit off. Love the rest of the robots though. Hopefully we'll get toys for a few of these.

In fact, does anyone suspect that this might be what they base the next toyline on, rather than a new TV series? It'd help bridge the gap between RotF and TF3 but they could still cancel it to make room for the next movie without having to worry about cutting its associated fiction short (since the game will already be finished.) If it's popular enough to warrant a continuation after the TF3 line has finished they can just make a sequel to the game.

To comment on the designs, HOLY GOD THEY LOOK REALLY REALLY AWESOME!!! :D ... Ok calm now.

Something interesting I noticed about them is that it looks like you can see the energon flowing through their bodies. I first saw this with Soundwave and then noticed that the others have the same look. Could be a new element to game play or just a cool design choice, either way I like it. And if there is going to be toys of these I can't wait to see how this "energon flow" will be done... light up leader class figures!:D

The general consensus is that yes, that prototype that was found along side "Drift" was indeed the same Optimus Prime design seen in these images. Notice the hips and "crotch" area, they are the same.

This would also explain why Hasbro was quick to take down all those images those 2 or so months ago.

I think this might not be a new series. I think this is a game set out to be a War Within/ Stormbringer idea in video game form as sort of a lead up to G1, or quite possibly, yes, a new series. But if it were a new series, It would not have gone to print unless hasbro gave a word. If Hasbro says nothing about it, then chances are it's just a Pre earth game.

looks very good...will it be available for every system?

produced by activison, then i dont think there wil be a license battle for it. If it got crazy graphics then Wii would be out of the game.

I hope this game will be awesome but i am concerned in couple areas

1. "The game is said to be in development at High Moon Studios (http://kotaku.com/tag/highmoonstudios/), developers of Darkwatch and The Bourne Conspiracy, and due for a 2010 release."
-I do not think any of these two games High Moon developed became a hits.

2. how long have them been developing this? Gears of War game play is awesome. but integrating transforming and alt mod roaming into this game might be difficult? They will need truly massive maps if it is not going to be free roaming.

i guess we will have to wait until the demo comes out. I am getting the game regardless if it's a win or fail.... i hope it's going to be good

SMOG
12-09-2009, 04:11 AM
That.... that's REALLY nice looking. There's something about those promo images that actually feels very oldschool, despite the fact that the designs are also clearly a mashup of Bayformer, War Within and classic styles. Who's responsible for these designs... it's an interesting direction.

If this game is any good, and becomes semi-popular, I could easily see us getting toys based on the game.

Well, it's a less intrusive way of showing how much damage a character's taken than having a health bar above their heads.

I have my doubts on whether or not there'll be Leader-class figures for this line, though. Classics, after all, never got anything above an Ultra (as a new mould, at least.) The Leader and Supreme classes seem to be reserved for lines with an associated movie or TV series pushing them; I suspect that if we get figures for this game they'll generally be Deluxes, Scouts and Voyagers, with maybe an Ultra or two thrown in for the bigger characters.

Pictures look great, though I think most of them are probably in-game movie shots.

My only fear is that the game looks like it could be a fighting game aka Mortal Kombat or something...I really hope it isn't.

If it's anything like Armada for PS2 I think we will be in for a treat.

Very exciting.

This unexpected piece of news has made my day! I'm kind of hoping it's not related to a new series, just because games that don't have to be tied down to a series or movie tend to be better overall.

But with that being said, I would very much dig a series like this. On Cybertron, no humans, completely CG. But we'll see.

The designs are very cool and I can see some awesome toys being made from these. Since they have no Earth mode to work around, they can work on the bot and alt modes in tandem to create something that both looks good and that a toy can be made very accurate to. If there is a new series and toyline, I can kiss my wallet goodbye.

But I'd be very happy with a small run of Video Game figures. Mostly deluxes and a few voyagers. Maybe one for each playable character.

Very cool stuff. Surprising to see a game that is not tied into another product lauch...example: Armada and Both movies got games based on them. And if infact this is tied to a new series, I think the images have given much of the fandom what they wanted...more G1 looking goodness.

Looks like Game Informer is being treated to a months worth of info about the game according to Seibertron.com.

http://www.seibertron.com/transformers/news/game-informer-to-give-month-long-coverage-of-war-for-cybertron/17499/

If you look at the bottom of that concept art you can see it dated "Oct 2008" and "For Hasbro review". Looks like this game has been in development for at least a year and Hasbro has done a good job of keeping it under wraps. Since the news of this games existence practically came out of nowhere and Hasbro has been very tight lipped about a post Animated series, the prospect of this game being a series tie-in is looking more and more possible.

While I agree that it does look like there will be a toyline associated - Game designers and 3D movie makers often build models and sculpts of the characters to get a better feel for them. They may have made a model so they can get a feel for how the model will move as it transforms...

Whisky Tango Foxtrot

I doubt that they'd make a whole new mould just for a pack-in exclusive. While there have been unique figures included with video games before (such as the Big Daddy included with Bioshock) they tend to be non-poseable figurines which are much easier to design and assemble than a Transformer.

If there's an exclusive pack-in toy with this game, it'll almost certainly be either a redeco or a plastic statue, not a fully transformable action figure.

Prowl_2009
12-12-2009, 11:03 AM
I second that, they wouldn't make a new sculpt simply to pack it in with this video game, they're more likely to go with an older, repainted sculpt. Cheaper to produce and easier to release in slightly smaller numbers as a video game exclusive.

Whisky Tango Foxtrot
12-12-2009, 11:07 AM
My guess is, seeing as how this is going to be a cybertron modes-only game, the pack-in figure will be a redeco of a Beast Machines Vehicon scout. Some of the Energon and Cybertron scouts could also fit (Skyblast would work nicely) but I think Beast Machines would fit a bit better, plus they aren't nearly as overused these days.

Looks like Starscream. Kinda hoping it isn't, though; seems like a rehash of his Cybertron/Galaxy Force design, which I wasn't much of a fan of.

Actually, I thought it was more of Soundwave's design. :/ I also think that's Skywarp, Because he's mainly purple and black.

This right here may very well be close to the peak of Transformers for me. It almost tops the "They were always real to me" video.

I am so hoping that this will be the next action figure series, and possibly have a more mature cartoon to accompany it. I'm hoping for new BSG level of grittiness combined with Megas XLR level of brutality.

I think all the Decepticons have purple "energon lights" in this game, while the Autobots have red. The dark colouring seems to be more due to the lighting.

Of course, it could be Skywarp, but it seems more likely that the first jet we see would be Starscream rather than one of his repaints.

EDIT: Come to think of it, it looks more like Ramjet than anyone else, with the dark red wings and everything else mostly grey.

Shepp
12-13-2009, 08:13 PM
I'm hoping for a melee deathmatch mode with full dismemberment and bot support. I have an urge to see some Decepticons cleaved through with an energon axe.

As far as that seeker in that image goes, I'm betting its Starscream. The darkness of it looks more like it comes from the lighting instead of the actual colours of the seeker.

edit:

I just noticed a hint of blue on it.

As far as transformation goes, this seeker looks like it may use the Cybertron / Titanium transformation scheme.

But then on closer inspection, it may be closer to the traditional G1 / Classics transformation. I can visualize the rear becoming very stocky legs, and the angular sections heading towards the front could easily be arms that have energon-like blades close to the wrists. This would make the cockpit area have to fold down, similar to G1, making the bottom of the Seeker the front side in robot mode.

I'm leaning towards this more G1-esque transformation scheme because the Ironhide pic I've seen from this game borrows heavily from the War Within version (which in turn was partly based on the G1 toy).

Prime looks heavily influenced (as always) by his War Within and G1 transformation scheme.

Okay, I did a quick photo edit of what I think the transformation scheme of this seeker would be.

Here it is.

Actually, this might work using the Armada Starscream transformation scheme too, with some slight differences.

I didn't notice until now that the designs are not only classics / movie inspired but also slightly Animated inspired.

Prime's alt mode and axe are very reminiscent of the Animated deluxe Prime figure whereas Megatron's head and altmode are also very reminiscent of the voyager Animated figure.

The more I look at these designs the more I like'em. They have a bit of everything I like from each of the recent incarnations of Transformers.

Yeah, I have to admit, I was not impressed with the TF trivia skills on display in that video. Wow. Those guys suck! All those answers were super easy...

The only answer I had to stop and think about for a moment was Liege Maximo... and in the end, they didn't even answer that question!!

Nightbird was a cheap trick question indeed. Arguably, since Nightbird truly is just a machine, she doesn't really count as "female" anyway. ;)

The webpage is up. (http://www.transformersgame.com) Right now it seems to consist of a "transmission recovery" minigame that allows you to unlock the trailer we've already seen, still renders of Optimus Prime and what appears to be a space fleet approaching Cybertron, as well as a very short video clip of a close-up of a Decepticon symbol on what looks to be a Seeker's vertical tail-fin. It says that the next batch of transmissions will be available in 31 hours.

The press release (http://www.tfw2005.com/transformers-news/video-games-17/transformers-war-for-cybertron-new-info-168902/) that they sent out a few days ago indicated that it'll be released for Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii and DS (although I'd imagine that the Wii and DS versions will be substantially different from the other three.)

Also, when posting the edit to my last message it completely escaped my mind that you can zoom in as much as you want with Flash. Here's the Cybertronian writing that translated to "One shall stand, one shall fall":

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y200/DIguana/War%20for%20Cybertron/oneshallstand.png

Should provide a starting point for decoding the rest of the Cybertronian alphabet when we have some longer pieces of text to work with.

I've partially translated it using numbers for the unknown characters, maybe someone who's better at word-scramble puzzles than me can figure it out:A1A2A34T 5S DAN6EL34 5SSH AN3475S2ENE347(Note: I may have gotten some of the spaces wrong. Here's the characters that correspond to each number in the partial translation:

In the background there are floating debris bits. These bits are actually pieces of the CGI character models.

Here's an example (but not the only one, I think I saw 2 or 3 different torsos, and a few shoulder bits)

I circled the floaty debris in question.

That right there is Optimus Prime's upper torso.

Its late to bring this to everyone's attention, but I see that right from the start the art department's establishing that Autobots have more round architecture and Decepticons have more angular architecture.

Fom a game standpoint this is great. Instinctively we'll know to approach or avoid something based on how round or angular it is.

So a health - repair pack thing for Autobots would be rounder, inviting the player to move towards it. Meanwhile a Decepticon tripmine or trap would be angular, showing that it needs to be avoided.

In addition to the standard colours and shades associated to each faction, we also now have shapes.

Why can't there be water on Cybertron? Humans have walked around on it without protection in many continuities, which means that it has gravity close to Earth's and it's in the right temperature range for liquid water to exist, and since oxygen and hydrogen are some of the most common elements in the universe it's quite likely that any planet within that range would have rain.

SMOG
12-20-2009, 06:02 PM
Scientifically speaking, that makes a certain amount of sense, even if the cartoon fact of having humans run around on Cybertron with a perfectly breathable atmosphere always seemed... unlikely to me.

Also, in the G1 Marvel continuity, water, or at least water with the same properties as found on Earth, is unknown on Cybertron. Hence the "surprise" when plain old water turns out to be the cure for Scraplets infestation.

Admittedly, that was a pretty lame twist too (and it was STILL lame when Shymalan used it in SIGNS!), and is hardly consistent with other things that have happened in the comics. In Marvel TF #1, Bumblebee immediately comments on how much he enjoys swimming, though that could be a simple terminology failure... substituting "water" for whatever common liquids are available on Cybertron.

I would just assume that precipitation on Cybertron would probably have a chemical composition different than it would on Earth.

zmog

Shepp
12-21-2009, 09:55 PM
Well, since hydrogen's one of the most common elements out there, and is probably widely used on Cybertron, I don't find it that far of a stretch for it to exist on the planet.

And if there's fire, there's oxygen. So the building blocks of water exist.

Now since fires don't spread insanely through the air, I'd say there are some other elements in the atmosphere, probably a great deal of nitrogen. Probably a decent amount of carbon, as well as some heavier elements like metals.

Anyways, water's just so damned common that I would find it hard to believe there was never any on Cybertron. But then I didn't think there was enough for rain. But then I never really though of Cybertron having a dense enough atmosphere to have much weather.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y200/DIguana/War%20for%20Cybertron/video.jpg

The camera pans downward and the robot in the lower right twitches and sparks while pieces fall off of him, obviously the victim of a recent Decepticon attack.

Okay, my original idea of transformation scheme for Starscream was pretty far off.

Its somewhat looking more like a cross between a VF-1 and G1 seekers, then highly stylized.

The most recent batch of transmissions at transformersgame.com consist of the same "Prime gets ready to attack a Decepticon with his axe" picture that was in the original GameInformer print article, a short video of Optimus and Ratchet running along and swatting Decepticons (couldn't get any screenshots in which you can actually tell what's going on, so you'll have to watch the video for yourself) and another rendered still of Optimus:
