Judging from the statistics, most probably a lot. Most just got away. Most stores have pictures of suspicious folks in the lost prevention offices, though. I knew someone who used to work in lost prevention and did keep an eye or two on some “frequent shoppers” if you may. He scammed $30k of stuffs and probably got noticed and tagged. Lost prevention people have to catch you on the spot or cops have reasonable suspicion to get a warrant & even a court order for a search. There was a case in the States where a person/team scammed Apple Stores $80k US with fraudulent returns & exchanges, but it is most probably because it involved $80k US of iPhones...
With such a big problem you would think, at least for the bigger chains, invested in things like RFId for checkout which is harder to fool.

Not the scale, but the bagging area, I thought it was also able to detect the weight of all scanned items (the reason the system would urge you to put the item in the bag if it wasn't there yet).

You're right but it just detects weight that something was placed there probably not sophisticated enough to detect the weight of specific items

Re: Medicine Hat man charged in retail fraud targeting retailers
Stealing is wrong, but f*** self serve registers. If I wanted to scan stuff I’d get a job as a cashier. You don’t want people taking advantage of your system, don’t be lazy, cheap butt-munches. Hire a cashier and give them a proper register.
