Stupid question, asking as a child of the 80s, but which of the holes in tape mode represent the tape mode holes?
Is it the 5mm hexagonal holes that are centered, or the cassette tape hole looking shoulder hinges that are too high on the tape?

to be fair (to be fairrrrrr) compared to an actual cassette, the spools are too high, and the hex holes are in the proper place.
