I collect both 3rd party and official Hasbro/Takara items. Scale wise or line wise, I've got a little bit of everything: CHUG, MP, Binaltech/Altenators, legends scale, SD style, Bayverse style, etc. etc.
There are good 3rd party companies (Mastermind Creations, Fansproject, FansToys), and there are sub-par companies (DacaToys, X2Toys, KFC - arguable). Some will produce figures that have more elaborate engineering than official toys, which results in having that "not-so-kid-like" appeal to them. But then it really boils down to each individual's preference for complexity. To a certain extent, some transformations just get too complex and you won't enjoy the figure as much because it may seem TOO complicated to transform and loses the fun factor in doing so. Most 3rd party toys are more expensive than official toys, mainly because these are smaller companies that have even less access to limited resources than Hasbro/Takara. But if it's a superior figure in your mind, you'll find a way to justify the higher price.
The point is, I collect what I like.
You should collect what YOU like. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks of your collection, nor should you care about those other opinions.
You are the one who spent your own hard-earned money into that collection so it's only
your own opinion of your collection that counts. If you feel that categorizing something as being "kid like" makes it less appealing to you, then don't collect it.
