Gimmicks as a child

what gimmicks drew you in as a child, to transformers or other toylines?
i was a kid at the premiere of Beast Wars, so I'll use that as my example.
I didn't care. period. My favourite toys were always the more poseable ones, and I never cared about launching missiles that came with them (I always lost them right away and never missed them) and hated toys that were centered around a gimmick (like the horrible Retrax basically took away any play value).
Even extending to other toylines, I was a big fan of Toybiz's Spider-Man line around 95-ish, and my favourite toy was always the "Super-poseable" one as opposed to the ones with stupid gimmicks on it.
So, my tastes in that regard still stand. The only gimmicks I can say I like are some auto-morph features (Like in Voyager Lugnut) and sound clips (in the Animated Leader figs).

What about you guys? Did you think about gimmicks as a kid or just not care?

Re: Gimmicks as a child

I really didn't care for the electronic gimmicks. They wore off fast on me. I got Omega Supreme one Christmas, and while I loved the figure and transformation, the walking/tank feature really didn't do anything for me. I felt Jetfire was a far more superior toy for the posability. Even today, I pass on Leader classes because the "lights & sounds" are a waste for me.

Re: Gimmicks as a child

not really transformers,
but nothing beats
"quick draw action"
especially when it you
have to squeeze the legs together.
and pop up wings are pretty cool too,
i have so many batman,
gargoyle,
and silverhawk figures,
because of that.

for transformers,
i really like it when all parts are integrated,
and there is a space place to store thier weapon,
in alternate mode.

Yep, me too. and add in not having to remove a part and move it to a new location on the body in order to transform.

I do like interesting transformation schemes and posability. And having all that stuff as show accurate as possible. Oh, plus a really nice deco. I like automorph as long as it makes sense and doesn't interfere with anything else.

As a kid I never liked the light and sound gimmick since it required batteries (which would often leak and corrode, ruining the toy) and they rarely satisfied me as far as sounding like the show.

I'm not too fond of the spring loaded missiles, since they just add in a missile to lose and could go off when you don't want them to, but then it's always fun to have a figure launch something.

I still stand by my opinion on light and sound, but now I'm completely against it. I'd rather they put more posability or make a sculpt better than to make something into a brick shape and pop in a speaker and sound chip.

For example, Cybertron Vector Prime. I'd rather have had his torso have some waist articulation than have the light and sound.

Same with movie Leader Prime and Megatron. They would have been much better off without the light and sound feature.

That being said, if they made a battery powered accessory like a jetpack or a cannon or something that had sound and light piping feature into the plastic of the stand alone figure, something that could be detached, I'd like that a whole lot better.

And as for anything motorized, no thanks. Motors complicate things even more as far as sculpt and functionality goes. Plus, if a gear strips it's teeth, the motor's useless anyways. Plus, if they make the motor feature required (like Armada Optimus Prime) then the toy runs into many problems when it stops working.

Hmm.... Spring loaded robot punching, chopping, etc. action doesn't thrill me. Animated Voyager Optimus Prime completely confused me with the torso spinning transformation. I nearly broke the thing by trying to do it manually.

Well, enough about my griping about these things. I know I'm not the target audience. Kids like things that shoot missiles, and move on their own, and have flashing lights and explosion sounds. And since that's what the target audience wants, that's what they'll get.

Re: Gimmicks as a child

Myself, I'm a fan of electronics if they're well-used and implemented.

My brother, who has to put up with hearing my transform figures? Not so much.

Re: Gimmicks as a child

I loved the Headmasters and Target Masters.

I always liked figures that came with smaller ones.

Cheers!
