Another tip: Research the closest ATM of your FI/credit union nearby, you may be using it before, during, or after the convention, and know your ATM cash withdrawal limit and perhaps increase it for the weekend only.
If you definitely want to buy something and don't have enough money, place a deposit with the seller, don't just ask them to hold it, many won't.
For the American visitors, Canadian cash is more preferable to US cash, even if the exchange rate is near parity. Most people pay a ~2% FX spread when redeeming it for CDN cash, and many sellers may be reluctant to take US cash since some may not be sure if they're real or not.
Then again, if you don't mind paying the $3 fee ($1.50 x 2) to withdraw from the 3rd party ATM machine at the hotel, why not?
