You know, I think it might work as an updated, "Generations-style" Star Saber (from back when Generations had some creativity in their character designs instead of just slavishly re-creating the boxy '80s look.) It wouldn't be able to do the whole combination gimmick of the original, of course, but I think I can make a version that's recognizable as the character.
The existing head is close enough, but I think I can get even closer using leftover parts from my
Customize Head set that I bought a while ago. I already made a Starscream-style head with it that I still haven't used (it ended up being too big for the custom I had planned) but the set includes enough parts to make multiple heads and I think I can put something sufficiently Star Sabery together with it. I've seen pictured of the Garudagear model with a Customize Head attached, so I think that the balljoints are compatible, although I don't know if it'll still be able to transform with it on.
