HUGE transforming Optimus Prime made from Lego

With the cold temperatures and glacial transformer product releases this time of year I found myself experiencing a edgy-kind-of boredom that lead me to a creative plight...

While staring at some Lego Exoforce, I couldn't help but imagine some knee joints and arm joints being used to make a big lego Transformer...but who? I decided to make it easy on myself and make a BIG HUGE PRIME.

Okay, it's been done before...probably a billion times by other fans...but why not me? Why can't I make my own design? WTH, I figured...and I poured out my bricks...many of which are...um...ancient....like dating back to the 1970s....

The transformation design I was aiming for was something in between an MP Prime and the modern 'twist-abdomen' approach we've been seeing since Classics Prime and even the recent RTS Legends Prime. I had the wheels in mind and those set the scale for the remainder of the figure.

Here are the results. Let's start with the Alt-mode:

Okay, this a pretty standard-looking, flat-face cab. As I said my bricks are ancient, so I'm using an old technic windsheild. It rolls beautifully. Yep, that's a matrix of leadership in there...requested by none-other than my son.

Well my son kept asking "Where's the trailer, Dad" and I couldn't let him down. He had a good point, but I was really struggling with how to build it with so few grey bricks. In the end, I used a TON of flat grey panels....looks kind of like big pixels, doesn't it? I still ran short and ended up making the roof black. Oh well, it won't be perfect...

If I only had a few more bricks, I would have made the trailer bigger. Oh well, it still works. No, it doesn't transform...next time, maybe?

The trailer does have a kick-stand.

As soon as I finish the trailer, my son is checking things out again. "Make the little roller-guy, daddy". Hmph, bright kid. 4 years old. Hmph. "Okay, Ryan!"

This thing is HEAVY. Again, being short on bricks I had to layer and layer and layer. It was a riot building at this scale. As you can see, I added some Reprolabels to the flat bricks for a finishing touch.

Coming up next, I'll transform him!

Re: HUGE transforming Optimus Prime made from Lego

I'll describe the process and then you can check out the photos...

-First, hinge the front grille out. This frees up his hands
-now swing out the arms...just like every other Prime
-Now for the torso-twist. No, it doesn't spring like "Battle Classics" Prime...thank gawd!!!
-the grill clicks back into place. Lego Technic rawks!
-flip up the head, like most Primes
-the legs and feet click apart and separate..the seudo-pins work well here (thanks again, Technic)
-The Exoforce hinges play a huge role in this figure...they help the feet rotate and hinge forward
-stand him up...rotate the hands, open the thumbs and figures. Yep, 4 posable fingers and a thumb each hand!

Here's the resulting robot. Oh yeah, I made his gun...

Lots of articulation...
-head goes up/down rotates.
-hands rotate, fold, fingers and thumbs
-elbows fold and swivel
-arms rotate, fold, open, swivel
-knees fold, rotate
-thighs open, rotate
-waist twists
-feet rotate, bend

Closeup of the face/chest. The eye/nose are a decal...at one point they were two blue 'dot' lego pieces, but I upgraded it. The mouthplate are two micro-wedges.

Note the hand details here. Also note the front wheels tuck alongside his waist...I tried a few different approaches but this was the most solid.

How big? Bigger than MP Prime.

Another shot with MP Prime.

I welcome any comments or questions...would love to see any other Lego Primes...link or pix!!!

Top notch engineered transforming! I've never attempted anything quite so amibitious with lego, but I'm sure it was difficult.

Thats incredible! Great job, I'd never be able to figure out something so ambitious.

If you had a small triangle shaped block for his mask it would likely capture him a bit more. I know I have black and white ones that have the look which is why it ccame to mind.

Really? Even with the discolored bricks?

I'm honestly flattered...

No, I'm afraid I won't sell because I'd be breaking up my vintage lego kits...but I'd be happy to help you Pascal or anyone who wants to build one...provide more detailed, show the figure in components, more photos, etc. etc.

It's easier to do than I expected.

Re: HUGE transforming Optimus Prime made from Lego

YES, EVEN WITH THE DISCOLORED BRICKS.

(I don't have enough Lego bricks to build that thing, I don't even have Technic bricks.)
