Quick review: ROTF Leader Megatron

ROTF Leader Megatron with FAB Megatron and Legends Megatron in robot mode

ROBOT MODE

PAINT APPS

Some black (tank treads, chest, face, hip guards) gold (legs, rear boosters, chest button), red (trigger button on right arm) and silver (knee guards, legs, head, top of rear boosters, chest). Nothing major, mostly a sea of heavily sculpted grey plastic. There's a black Decepticon logo on the chest button.

ARTICULATION

Right arm: shoulder 1 (360), shoulder 2 (in/out). a

Left arm: shoulder 1 (360), shoulder (in/out), bicep swivel, elbow, middle claw.

Head: up/down, left/right (slightly).

Waist: none.

Legs: hips 1 (front/rear), hips (in/out), upper leg swivel, knee, toes, heels.

Knee and hip guards can also be positionned at will.

GIMMICKS

Push down the chest button and you will simultaneously see/hear:

-spinning gears in the chest
-moving chest armor plates
-moving head
-flashing red lights (chest/head)
-"I am Megatron!" sound

Move the right arm up and down and you will crashing sounds and the lights will flash 3 times.

Press the red button on the right arm to fire the missile.

Pull the black lever on the right arm to deploy the blade.

TRANSFORMATION

COMPLEXITY

Same level of complexity as Movie 1 Leader Megatron I would say, maybe a little bit more involved. Nothing tricky, just parts to position and lock into place. See the various video reviews on Youtube. A good level 3 I would say.

GIMMICKS

Disconnect the right arm and you will hear a crashing sound and the lights (head/chest) will flash 3 times.

Rotate the hips and you will hear the transformation sound and the lights (head/chest) will flash 3 times.

TANK MODE

PAINT APPS

Some black (tank treads, side boosters), gold (sides, rear boosters), red (trigger button) and silver (front guards, top of rear boosters). Nothing major, mostly a sea of heavily sculpted grey plastic.

ARTICULATION

Unless you disconnect the turret, it can't rotate or move up and down.

Tank rolls on 6 little wheels (2 at the front, 4 at the back).

GIMMICKS

Press the red button on the turret to fire the missile. You will hear a firing/crashing sound and the lights will flash 3 times.

---

PROS

-gimmicky right arm
-articulated claw on the left arm
-head can finally turn
-Mechalive gimmick is pretty spectacular
-voice clip is pretty terrifying!
-other sounds and lights
-stable feet
-aggressive look in both modes
-satisfying transformation (not too simple, not too complex)
-visible head in tank mode... Megatron doesn't care!
-taller than Movie 1 Megatron!
-strong connectors in both modes

CONS

-no right elbow/swivel
-head articulation could have been better
-turret can't rotate or move up/down
-turret is more or less defined, especially from the rear
-rear tank treads tend to slightly rotate outward because of the weight
-visible head in tank mode... the fan might care!
-could have used more paint apps (hello Premium!)
-voice clip is triggered whenever you want to try the Mechalive gimmick
-blade spring could be stronger (blade tends to flop a bit instead of staying fully deployed)

Re: Quick review: ROTF Leader Megatron

Thanks for the review Pascal! Great as usual.

I think the most disappointing things for me are:
Tank turret does not move.
No right elbow.

:-(

He looks real beefy. I love the look from his backside, I'm really digging the hulking back chunk. Thanks for the review P.

Re: Quick review: ROTF Leader Megatron

I know I will like the new Prime ten times as much, but this has to be my favorite Megatron since... well, I don't know. To me, ROTF Megatron takes the best from some of my favorite incarnations of Megatron: G1 (name, colors, arm cannon), G2 (tank mode) and Movie 1 (mean and almost techno-organic cybertronian war machine).

Is ROTF Megatron better than the Movie 1 version? Most probably. But given they're from the same continuity, they complement each other very well... if you're into movie stuff! One thing is sure: the Voyager version will put the Movie Voyager version to absolute shame. Can't wait to get it.

A picture with Movie 1 Leader Megatron...

Re: Quick review: ROTF Leader Megatron

Ugh, yeah kinda hideous to me too. Other than the poor articulation, etc., I find it annoying that they are making the paint apps crap on the first runs of the figures again...which means inevitable premiums again...which means anyone who buys the pre-premiums is getting chumped.

Don't know that the figure designs or toy molds have anything to do with Bay whatsoever.
