The ET burial was because most Atari games only put out a few hundred thousand copies and had 6 months to complete. In order to accept the deal with Spielberg, Atari had 6 weeks to complete the game from start to finish and were required to make 5,000,000 copies.
The rest is obvious, especially if you've ever played that game.

The happy part of that story is that the sales guy(s) at Atari that made the deal with Spielberg probably got huge bonuses for the sale.
