First of all, I was a bit hesitant in calling it "Ultimate", because that implies it's the best version out there. There are plenty of great Unicron customs out there, and if it's considered
among them, then that's good for me. Hey, at least I'm not calling it "Masterpiece", lol.
I went into this project with the intent of making the most accurate Unicron out there, both in terms of the G1 Animated movie footage, and the original Floro Dery designs.
Here are some of the mods I made to the figure:
- added "spikes" to the shoulders
- added a third wing, then moved the wings to the shoulder area
- added a "collar" to his neck
- removed the "tusks" from his shoulders and attached them to the planet shell
- added the extended bits to his feet
- added the "wing" bits to his knees
- added the "brain" in the chest area
- added the smelting pool in the stomach area
I've always shared the mindset of those that don't mind kibble as long as it isn't excessive. Of the mods I made, only the extra wings and collar have to be removed for transformation, everything else doesn't affect it at all. I could have put another foot extension on the inside of his feet, but (1) he could no longer stand straight after that, and (2) they would have to be removed for transformation. That's also the reason why I didn't try to make it a complete sphere with more outer shell pieces. It's got enough extra parts as it is, so I tried to keep it to a minimum.
Also, I used pearl red in the stomach area to try and simulate the "energy" look (seen below) and also painted his back to better simulate the original toon look (also seen below). I went with a different shade of orange for the outer rings and the planet mode parts, to simulate the exposure to cosmic elements (as I would assume he's in that mode most of the time, therefore the robot mode isn't exposed as often).
So, without further adieu, here is Ultimate Unicron:
Planet mode pics will come later, once I remember how to transform the damn thing.
