What was your gateway drug?

We all know that this is plastic crack. What was your first hit that got you collecting? Have you continued since childhood? Did you take a break and come back? What brought you back to the wonderful world of Transformers?

For me it was Alternators Smokescreen.

I had long sold off everything toy related and "grown-up". Found a good woman, married her, and was starting a family. I still remember walking by and seeing this cool looking car with a picture of a robot on the box. That looks like one of those Transformer things I used to love. Upon closer inspection I realized it WAS one of those Transformer things I used to like... but WAY cooler. I had to have it.

From there it was all down hill. I tried to limit things to just this or that, but when I realized how much awesomeness there was... I was hooked.

How about you?

Re: What was your gateway drug?

Had a few figures growing up, mostly Beast Wars, but also a couple of Gen2. Had stopped around the end of the Beast Wars series.

The habit was picked up again though when the Generations subline came out. Picked up Cybertronian Optimus Prime and it has ballooned from there.

Re: What was your gateway drug?

Ah yes the first hit that leads to a relapse...

I had some toys when I was a kid and I loved them but I never collected because even back then I wanted them to look more TV accurate.

Then one day I'm walking through a comic shop picking up a new GN as I stopped buying singles... And I see the "fansproject protector armour" all set up on a shelf, I was 8 again but now the toy looked right and I actually had money... Protector led to city commander and city commander led to bruticus then the takara/classics/uniteds... and I am hooked agian, hunting for hard to find and rare figures... Ce la vie.

I had a small collection that burnt about 12 years ago, which got me out of collecting.

It was that exact same figure that got me back in. It started slowly(alternator, classics) and became a runaway train when Animated was released. It's starting to slow again, but that's mostly due to space issues.

Re: What was your gateway drug?

Loved and grew up with G1. I didn't have a lot of the toys because my home town really didn't have a department store. Closest thing was a crappy lil Canadian Tire. It was very rare that the CT would have anything besides minibots. I always had a void where the figures I really wanted never filled heh.

Fast forward to about 14 years ago and a buddy showed me the dinobots he had collected...a few weeks later we went to Pack Ratz in Hamilton and I bought a MIB G1 Ultra Magnus for $40 and never looked back.

Oh to think all of the money I spent and made off this addiction...

Re: What was your gateway drug?

I grew up with the G1 cartoon and had a G1 Inferno and some Beast Wars figures when I was younger. During my childhood those figures slowly disappeared.

"Growing up" I picked up a few different toys every now but nothing had the same effect that TF's had on me when I was younger. So, much like obakemono and Commandoclone87, I saw the Generations line, realized I had money and picked up a WfC Optimus.

Now I'm addicted to the CHUG line and don't regret anything at all.

Re: What was your gateway drug?

Growing up we were quite poor so i didn't have too many transformers though by far they were my favorite toy. The ones i did have eventually broke since i had 3 other siblings..fast forward to 2003 and after a long lengthy night of fighting with the ex, i went on ebay for the first time and decided to look up transformers and picked up g1 red alert and roadbuster, the same first 2 transformers i had when i was a kid!.... and thats how it all began!

Re: What was your gateway drug?

I had lots of G2 (A few G1's) and Beast wars when I was a kid, they now live in my parents basement sadly. Generations Drift got me started on collecting last summer and now my bookshelf is quite covered in plastic crack.

ROTF Soundwave got me into this downhill spiral... But my first Takara toy was a Brave Goldran... Who transforms...

And my best friend had a BW Sea Clamp that I really wanted
