Wow, sounds like a complete douche-canoe. I'm happy to have avoided this store and will continue to do so. There's something to be said for good customer relations and it sounds like this guy has zero clue what that is or how to go about it.

Nearly every small retailer does this. Anything short-packed, rare, or desirable gets a markup of anywhere from 10% - 100% above MSRP. Sometimes it works out due to tax savings, or free shipping, but most of the time it's annoying, or downright unethical (depending on your viewpoint).

Regardless, there are lots of retailers to choose from, so vote with your wallets, but don't be surprised that this is how things are now. Find a store you like, and you feel is fair, and ignore the rest.

Simple as that.

I have been frequenting comic stores for 35 years and I have never ever ever seen this. The stores would give regulars running discounts under MRSP. Comic and collectible stores have different profit margins than an online business or large retailer leading to slightly higher prices.

The gouging is a recent phenomena and exists mostly in online retailers. The anonymity of being an online retailer enables this. Also why scalpers use Kiji instead of Facebook. The problem IMO started with comic-cons. 10 years ago you would go for great deals and now you only go to a Con if you want to pay an inflated price. The mentality of it all changed drastically as people got greedier for money.

Certainly not the case with A3U when they were still a small store on Rupert St. in Vancouver, Ultra Action Toys in Richmond or Toy Traders in Langley... Wasn't the case either locally with La BĂȘte Noire here in Drummondville, or that other store I forgot the name of in Montreal on St-Hubert St., nor it is now with Geekstuff in Laval or Toys on Fire in Montreal...

Guess stores in Alberta are just cooler! Volume also matters.

Doesn't change the fact that the dude is an asshat. He's holding customers preorders over their heads and providing nothing in return. It's kind of hard to shop elsewhere when your money is stuck with their store.

I second this. Some comic book stores in Alberta, like Warp, have given me discounts when buying multiple items from them.
