I agree with this.
If anything killed Optimus Prime, it was his own principles and morality, which (I think) would have actually prevented him from killing Megatron.
If not for Hot Rod, Optimus would have decided to arrest Megatron, Megatron would have scrambled for the gun, and at that point Prime would have had no choice but to shoot him.

the primes all agree its the Rods fault "LOL" Prime by this time had had enough of Megs and would've pulled the trigger (was only giving him a sporting chance "Primes Honour") and become a bay bot,... but the Rod got in the way Dammit

Optimus killed himself. Pure hubris, letting the outcome of a war lasting millennia be decided by single combat. Rodimus had the right idea - all the Autobots should have just opened fire on Megatron then and there. You don't take that kind of chance in war.

Hot Rod's fault, definitely.
He didn't have to jump on Megatron. He could have shot the blaster for which Megatron was reaching. Or, Megatron's hand. Or Megatron. Hot Rod also disobeyed Kup's direct order to not interfere.
