Small project... can't get a Red Wing? make one.
I just wanted to post real quick today as it's the last day of the TrU 20% sale, in case this might be something that someone else might consider.
For me, the availability of Red Wing, the only seeker outside the original triad that appeals to me, has been terrible. Target is no longer in Canada, and their site is all about can't buy this figure unless you have their credit card. Ebay is nothing but scalper pricing, and Amazon is even worse.
So, last night I just said enough and decided to simply make one of my own.
Side note: I know that it's not going to have the had-a-stroke grin face, but I don't like that face, so this is a win-win for me to do this.
So, got myself a Starscream and started to work on it.
First thing to mention: this is a later released and I expected the chest popping out thing to be fixed on him as someone mentioned somewhere (my original isn't too bad, but still, my Skywarp and Thundercracker are much better) and that turned out to be a lie. This one is/was a lot worst. The piece barely holds at all. So, too lazy to return and exchange it but not lazy to say screw it and let's fix it.
Drilled the parts, inserted a twisted wire and the part is now solid and will never be able to pop of ever again.
Once this was done and I super glued my finger closed due the cut/rip I ended up with to my finger with the wire was sticky out of the spool as I unrolled it, I started to paint.
So here's the first stage done...the red is done aside a few tiny things that I missed. I'll post more pictures later, so to show all of the steps and sides/parts.
Note that I'm not going to dismantle any parts unless they simple pop off. This is straight painting the figure as simply as possible.
The paint I'm using is Tamiya X07 red and it's been simply amazing.
Stay tune for the next steps, I'll post as I go forward.

And more red done and then black...
I bit too much tonight and had some trouble but got things back on track...
So next phase, adjusting a bit of the edges, more details and touch-ups, and then the silver.

Looks good @imfallenangel ... I may have to try this out myself. And thanks for the tip about getting the chest piece to stay in place as well! It’s like he becomes a semi-partsformer when going through transformation mode, lol.

Re: Small project... can't get a Red Wing? make one.
One thing that I will say...
My original Starscream may have a chest piece that pops out due to being a bit loose.
BUT...
This copy that is a much newer release (has the different Decepticon logo) which someone stated that they had "fixed" the chest looseness is seriously not the case, and then some.
I'm getting really frustrated as the QI issues with this one, which now I can't return... otherwise I would.
- the chest piece looseness was seriously worse. But the pin-fix is applied so that's no longer an issue.
- his right hand keeps coming out of the socket when I try to turn it, it's really getting annoying. Painting the hand and socket didn't help (and even worse due to the additional "thickness" that makes it tighter)
- The wonderful surprise that the guns are cheaper, and I had one snap it's handle/5mm pin in the socket this morning as I was testing it out. The paint did add some tightness, BUT as it's snapped, I can see that there's a really bad flaw as I can see that there's missing plastic inside, probably an air bubble that weakened the handle horribly. So I had to drill it, use a screw to get it out of the socket, and had to work on repairing it, using a metal pin to re-enforce it, and some super-glue with talcum to rebuild this handle... I'll probably have to sand it now, and hope it works otherwise it's have to be redone with epoxy.

Re: Small project... can't get a Red Wing? make one.
And done. Today was the silver paint, and then the touch-ups.
The biggest pain was the guns, thanks to the weakpoint of the defect. I ended up sanding/filing the handles down a bit, to ensure that once painted they wouldn't be too tight. They are a bit loose now, something that I'll fix with an extra coat of paint or such.
So there it is.. a repaint of Star Scream into a Red Wing.
I can say that the pictures don't do it justice, it's smashing good, the red is a bit metallic, shinier, darker and looks great. Same with the black and silver.
This was done without taking anything off/apart, so it was a steady hand and a bunch of touch-ups. And as this is painted, everything about it is so thight now, so got to be gentle with it.
Hope you enjoy!
