according to CBC news, the Jets name is owned by the NHL. if the new owners decides to use the name, the NHL say we can have the name back for free.

At first I thought it was because of Bobby Hull "The Golden Jet" when they were in the WHA. BUT according to Wikipedia they took their name from an old WHL team.

Re: The Winnipeg Jets Possible Return
Here ya go, what the Wiki doesn't know won't hurt it much But it is right about the WHL, I never knew that tidbit before. Ben Haskin was also the owner of the WHA Jets.
"Before moving to Arizona, the Phoenix Coyotes had been the Winnipeg Jets. The Jets’ name started with a junior team in Winnipeg. Ben Haskin, who ran the team, was a friend and admirer of the man who owned the New York Jets in the National Football League. The name followed Winnipeg into the World Hockey Association, then into the NHL. When the Jets moved to Phoenix in 1996, the name Coyotes was chosen in a name-the-team contest. Coyotes are common in the Arizona desert."
I found this here, but its avialable elsewhere as well. http://umanitoba.ca/cm/vol15/no4/hoc...aforkids2.html
As to the Jet's name the NHL reaquired the name and Gary Bettman has mentioned that it will be given back to Winnipeg as a part of the deal if they choose to use it.

Re: The Winnipeg Jets Possible Return
I hope they're called the Jets and that the new jersey will be close to the original. Too many bad jersey designs out there!

^^ Here, Here!
It'd be great to see the return of the Classic, or at least a descent spin on, the Classic jersey.

If that's the case then they better frigging make them the Jets.
I would definitely like to see old logo back, but a modern revamp would be cool too. All the new logos they come out with these days are cartoony and lame. The simplest ones are the best.

Re: The Winnipeg Jets Possible Return
I was at the Upper Canada Mall on Friday and stopped in at Pro Image. While looking for some vintage-style Jets t-shirts, the fellow behind the counter mentioned to me that, be it caps, shirts, jerseys ect, since it was announced that Winnipeg was getting an NHL team again, they can't hold on to any Jets memorabilia.
Just thought that was something worth sharing, and I don't even live in Winnipeg!
Go Jets!

Re: The Winnipeg Jets Possible Return
The "Jets" have been lucrative for the NHL for years now, even with no team. That Vintage stuff of course sells like crazy in Peg City.
