Weathered metal look

Rookie customiser, painter quest. How do you get the dirty/weathered metalic look ? what painting processes do use guys use and can it be done without acccess to more advanced modeling supplies?

I've tried but my results are running me out of paint quickly, and making a mess in my apartments 'living room", the small one i have.

Thanks in advance

Re: Weathered metal look

Drybrushing is usually the technique, but I'll permit someone who has actually done it to explain it.

Re: Weathered metal look

step by step=
  1. clean the figure with soapy water and a toothbrush
  2. let him dry completely
  3. lay down a nice thin coat of matte/flat black
  4. take your brush and dip it in the paint(metallics work way better than solid colors)
  5. i usually use a piece of card board(ko card backers work nice here cause they have a more waxy feel to them which will help in the next step
  6. keep stroking the head of the brush in one direction onto the cardboard until there is almost no paint left on the brush.
  7. lightly go over your figure with the brush always going the same direction
  8. as you progress doing it,the less you do in a certain spot, the lighter the metallic will be.likewise, the more you go over a certain area, the more vibrant the metallic will be.
  9. as you "drybrush" it,almost all of the raised details in the mold will start "popping" out.
  10. once he's all done and dry,hit the bot with a nice coat of matte clearcoat
  11. sit back and stare at your new bot
(i actually learned to dry brush by reading a tutorial done by "jin saotome" a few years back.check it out at his site,it even has some nice reference pics.also, check the tutorials here, there may be one in there for drybrushing techniques)

There's also washes, which I've seen used in hobby miniature painting, which seemed to work pretty well for making something seem grimy, oily, or otherwise filth-encrusted, if thats what you're going for.

Re: Weathered metal look

I'll be taking pics of my ROTF Devastator today. I used several techniques for weathering, rust, tarnished metal, etc.

Some involved washes, some involved dry brushing, others I did some "new" stuff, such as scar up the plastic with a hot knife or dremel to create wear and tear. I also used some thick paints dabbed them in areas to create textured surfaces.
