Re: Are Cyber Keys really this expensive?
I think it is MUCH more a case of eBay over pricing things.
Almost all parts on eBay are just as expensive as buying some toys.
If you REALLY care and want the key that came with the exact figure then I would assume it is much harder to find. I mean, some toys are hard to come by so it would be normal that their individual parts would be stupidly priced.
Its all about patience.

Re: Are Cyber Keys really this expensive?
This is more a case of scalpers trying to make as much money as possible. There are some ebay users that will take buy a complete figure for something like $10-$15 and the sell it in pieces for something like $5-$10 each. For four limbs, a gun, a body and a head, they'll double or even triple their money. Think of how much an insectoid tf with all those extra limbs would fetch.

eBay isn't the best place to buy parts because most parts are sold at scalper prices. TFcon and this forum is the best place to find cheap parts (key in you case)

Re: Are Cyber Keys really this expensive?
Oh good.
I thought I didn't get the memo that Cyber Keys shot up in price. I know certain accessories from various lines are in demand, and are actually worth it, but I figured these keys should be cheap.
Whew.
Well, if anyone reading this, I need some CYB-Unicron keys (#dgt3).

They didn't shoot up in price, they're just hard to find and some people don't know what they have and people who do know charge too much!
I've been looking for a Leader Megatron Key and an extra missile to complete my Megatron. I've also got a GF Op key I've been looking for to complete him as well. This has been going for about a year now!
Accessories are definitely worth it depending on the figure. I lucked out and got a Trypticon Electro Disruptor for $55 including shipping. So much $$ for just a little piece of plastic, but it's made my Trypticon complete and I couldn't be happier.

Re: Are Cyber Keys really this expensive?
Well Trypticon being 27 years old, and it's one of the smallest G1 accessories, it's understandable that a kid would lose it fairly easily.
I paid $25 + shipping for my first Scamper's little gun (this was waaaay before the reissues and KOs). The 2nd came as a fluke, I bought a TF lot, and it was not in the picture, but it was wedged in a void space of a leg of a larger figure (forgot who though). Must have been in the seller's toy box like that for all those years.
Compared to Cyber Keys which are generally attached to the figure so you don't lose them.
