Because collectors are stupid.
Stupid, in this hobby, always over pays for common items simply to have it a few weeks before most people.
I know there is a psychological term for this impulse buying to satisfy some internal desire, but I can't think of it off the top of my head.

Yeah people will try anything to make a buck.
But if you think this is bad, does anyone remember back in the day there was a big kafuffle on the youtubes because some reviewer paid $300 for a voyager animated blitz wing stolen from the factory, so they could be the first to review it?

I don't say it's anyone trying to make a buck so much as ppl are willing to shell it out. A lot of eBay auctions were done in bid format and bidders willing to one up everyone else so they could have it so I say it's more that ppl were willing to spend that high
