Fixing MP-5 Accessory Kit Rusty Screws

I ordered this kit from Robot Kingdom:

http://www.robotkingdom.com/mp05kitr.html

The kit is super cheap because it has rusty screws:

So I went to Home Depot and picked up some 6x5/8 and 4x1/2 screws to replace the rusty ones:

The 2 screws on the left were replaced by the 6x5/8 screws and all the other screws were replaced by the 4x1/2 screws. Even though all the screws are different lengths, you can replace them all with screws of the same length.

After removing the screws and cleaning things up with Q-Tips, there isn't a trace of rust anywhere on the plastic. I changed the philips style round head screws with robertson style flat head screws but I think it looks great.

Looks good, I might have opted for panhead (metal) screws instead of wood screws but that works.

nice clean up job!!
remember too that a $1.99 bag from value village of random toys/junkers will also yield you some usefull "newer" screws, even tiny ones if you need.

Yes, robotkingdom.com and chimungmung.com both have a great selection of cheap Transformers but the shipping kills any savings you think you might be getting. Even though Hong Kong to the west coast of Canada isn't even really that far, shipping via air is way more costly than shipping ground. This $30 kit cost me about $75 CAD once I received it. Still better than Ebay prices.

For anyone interested, I'm receiving a second one this week that I'll also be repairing and then placing up for sale.

Re: Fixing MP-5 Accessory Kit Rusty Screws

This kit comes with die cast metal leg pieces to swap onto your figure and it has a mount on it for the stock. I couldn't originally find screws to swap into these die cast pieces because of the small size but then I realized I could simply use the screws from the original pieces on the figure. I literally just popped the piece off its ball joint, swapped the screws and swapped the die cast replacement parts on.

Re: Fixing MP-5 Accessory Kit Rusty Screws

Awesome job guys!

Unfortunately (or fortunately) you inspired me to closely inspect my add on kit that I've had for 3 years now. Lo and behold, the screws are all rusty. Not sure if it came like that or they just rusted over time.

Anyways, looks like I'll be visiting Crappy Tire for some 6 x 5/8 and 4 x 1/2 screws sometime soon!

Re: Fixing MP-5 Accessory Kit Rusty Screws

Very nice, I did similar thing on my kit to replace the rusty screws as well. And I cover the top with the RC toy lubricant oil, which is black and will prevent the screws become rusty again.
