What you've posted here is a good visual representation of one of the guesses I had for the original display (using nails and pressure).

SHE. Actually used yarn as close as I could to the wall color, straddled it around the box nice and tight. Then clear thumb tacks. I didn't put it through the yarn, just hung the item atop. If your box is awkward, it takes abit to get the string on so it balances, but it worked after many brainstorming ideas. And now they can be moved around or over to add more.
