ROTF Mega Power Bots Devastator review
I've had that toy for a week now, I know that figure is far from being everyone's cup of tee, but given no one has reviewed it anywhere despite it being released months and months ago, I thought some of you might at least be intrigued.
ARTICULATION IN ROBOT MODE
Arms can rotate at the shoulders from the 6 o'clock position to 12 o'clock and the legs can rotate front and rear at the hips from the 9 o'clock position to 4 o'clock. Limited but still decent for that kind of toy. You can also make him walk on all 4, but he will look down.
GIMMICKS IN ROBOT MODE
The toes on the right leg (Long Haul) are spring-loaded. When you put Devastator's weight on them, some kind of stomping sound (or is it an engine stalling?) will be heard. Eyes will light up as well.
If you slide Scrapper's cab toward the front, the shovel splits in 3 to form a hand (both sides move down while the center move up). No sound effect here, but cool nonetheless.
If you push on Hightower's crane arm, you will trigger a firing sound and the eyes and the front of Hightower will light up.
On the waist is a plate with a Decepticon symbol. If you slide it down, the clear green grinder of doom (which has various debris and car parts molded in!) located in the chest will spin, light up and make a grinding sound (the one heard on the Devastator racetrack). The eyes and forehead will also light up. You can also see the grinder spin from the rear (same color/kind of detailing), but the entire unit is not see-through. You can only the lights from the front.
If you keep sliding that piece up and down, you will give the grinder some momentum and different mechanical sounds and phrases will be heard (the speaker and batteries are located in the left leg btw):
-We... are... Devastator!
-Smash!
-Trash... Autobots!
-Ha, ha, ha, ha!
-Prepare for extermination!
-Humf!
-Destroy... Autobots!
Pretty cool. I wish Combiner Devastator had all those clips!
TRANSFORMATION
He does transform! Straighten the legs, swing the arms completely up and lay Devastator flat on his belly. The end result? An armada of interconnected Constructicons in vehicle mode!
Mixmaster (head - front) somehow got painted orange here, not sure why. Same thing with Rampage. Scrapper (right arm - front right), Hightower (left arm - front left), Long Haul (right leg - rear right) and Rampage (left leg - rear left) follows him. Forget about the Scavenger center piece (torso), he doesn't have any real discernable alternate mode in that form.
The grinder of doom is still visible in that mode. You can't see through the chest but the rear portion is also clear green and has the same kind of detailing.
Scrapper and Long Haul roll on their actual wheels; Mixmaster and Scavenger roll on 2 rolling balls located on the upper chest; Hightower and Rampage roll on 2 little wheels each located under their tracks.
GIMMICK IN ALTERNATE MODE
Scrapper and Hightower retain their gimmicks in that mode.
If you roll the entire thing (and it rolls pretty well!), Long Haul's front wheels will trigger some kind of cacophonic sound: horns, engines... stuff! Look out, Devastator is coming at you!!
LAST WORDS
Obviously, the toy is aimed at younger kids. My 13-month old daughter loves it... and daddy too. It's just fun to mess around with. Despite the deformed look, the detailing is pretty good all over. Could almost pass for FAB Devastator if there was one. That said, the toy is expensive ($50), so if you really want one, I suggest you wait for a good sale.
Pictures will follow soon.
