Where else can you buy it if people like that go out and buy them all first?
The problem isn't so much the scalping, it's how these guys create their own demand.
Most of us don't have the time or inclination really to hunt down these things the day they come up or run to wherever someone has posted a sighting and clean the store out of the item in question.
The biggest irk is that I know for a fact that some of the worst offenders int his regard are TRU employees.

This part is true. I've heard it straight from an employee's mouth.

I hate scalpers but I can totally understand some Kijiji markup to offset inevitable low ball offers. Having said that, nearly 100% markup is a little bit silly. I would just make the guy a reasonable offer if I was interested in the item.

Re: Dealling with People on Kijiji.... My head Explodes
Another situation that I have encountered on Kijiji are the people who themselves overpaid for an item and understandably aren't willing to let these same items go for crumbs when the time comes for them to downsize their collection and sell. Again, I think that this is completely different than scalpers who are hoarding high demand items to simply turn a profit.

You could just as easily be talking about people on the boards as sellers on kijiji.

Re: Dealling with People on Kijiji.... My head Explodes
Jokes aside, I've had pretty good luck with finding things online recently (bought a lamp, couch, ottoman, and dining set in the last few weeks), and I think for the most part its just about ignoring adds that're asking like twice what you wanna pay. As far as selling, if something new sells for 800, be ready to sell your mint condition "used" item for less than half (or even a third if its not super unique), and that's assuming you've taken a couple of useful pictures & actually left contact info because without those two things there's not even a point. Taking similar adds into account when posting an asking price & being in the same city as what you're wanting to sell never hurts either.
Why these simple things seem to escape people is beyond me hah.
