JB Weld saved me $1000....

So....go figure... Friday before May long weekend...the hottest weekend we've seen in Calgary for a long time..I'm driving along and the A/C in my little Yaris starts pumping out hot air..great...I Get the car in to the dealership I bought it from because its still under warranty only to have it diagnosed as a rock puncture in the condenser...no warranty and I'm out $150 for the 15 minute diagnosis.. So, me being the cheap-o do-it-your-selfer.. I grab a pack of JB Weld and go to work. Found the area where the leak was comming from and carefully administer a small amount of the miracle compound. Let it cure overnight and off to Napa for for a can of refridgerant. They were good enough to spot me the tool so I proceed to recharge the system in the parking lot....The JB held perfectly, no leaks whatsoever and the best part is that the a/c is blowing cooler than it ever did.....So..after accepting the fact that I would probably have no a/c in the car for the summer i've now got icy cool air blowing and saved about $1000 parts/labor...I Love JB Weld!

All Hail JB Weld!

Is the condensor metal on the Yaris? Did you have to bang it out straight where the puncture occured first before applying the compound?

Condenser is good ol' soft aluminum. The visible damage looked the same as if a bee plowed into it. There's at least 100 other "dings" that looked just as bad but only one leaker..

Do it! I Love jacking around in the garage...that's where I do my finest work. On Saturday I was able to patch the Yaris, do all 4 brakes on my wife's business partner's Subaru, overhaul carbs for a 98 ZX9 and even tweeked the neighbor's kids 78 KZ650 carbs. Done by noon, beer's and sunshine for the afternoon... A perfect day!

Yep... too many younger tech's out there seem to only know how to re&re (remove and replace). The art of "repairing" things is slowly disapearing....sadly..
