Wow, thanks for all the input guys!

You're better off picking up something like a used Civic, Corolla, Cobalt, Focus, ect. These cars don't run even half the price of a hybrid, and will serve all your needs well for a mere fraction of a used hybrid's sticker cost.

Personally, I don't think we need a hybrid. In fact, I don't think we need a car since we only drive on weekends. The farthest we drive in a day is maybe Vancouver to Surrey. Really, a car would be nice for camping and such, but that's about it. It's my GF that is hung up on hybrids. I was thinking the same thing as the others who echoed that in order to really reap the benefits, you have to drive it a lot. Maybe in a year or two when we have kids we will, but right now? I can deal with a 5K beater.

I heard that Hybrids actually cause more longterm enviromental problems then the new 'typical' vehicals being built now. Is that true?
Also, I would think the cost to fix a Hybrid would be higher... something to think about.

Yeah, the fixed costs. That's what scares me. If we get a new one, we'd have a warranty, but that's at least 10-15K more for a new one. I'm gonna have to use my home equity LOC to pay for this thing, which I am not happy about. I am debt free (besides my mortgage), so the last thing I want is new debt. We could totally get by the next two years without a car, but she won't have it that way. In the end, if she's happy, that means I don't get yelled at or nagged to death, so she'll probably end up getting what she wants.
Man, I am really, really hating that other driver right now. There goes my toy budget. I'm off to cancel a bunch of preorders now...

Talking from experience, eh TJ? lol
Wouldn't it be cheaper to just lease a cheap car with the minimum requirements until you purchase the ideal family car in a few years?

That is what they say. But just who are "they?"

Alas, there is no such thing as logic or reason when your girl texts you four times in one day saying how much she's looking forward to driving a Prius.

Damn...that's like showing off that you have a 2 inch penis...
I'd suggest reasoning with her to show her how it's not worth the money and let her actually test drive the Prius and another non-hybrid and cheaper (or better value) car. She's a woman...so reasoning is gonna be hard or non-existent. Time to lay down the law.
Really...Diving into your HELOC for a fucking Prius?! You're a banker, you know how stupid this is!

Gah! Don't remind me. The good news is, my interest rate is so stupidly low on it, and between my income and her nursing income, we should be able to pay things off fairly quickly. Or quicker.
Oh, and it's not how big it is, it's how you use it. But seriously, it sucks.

Re: Hybrids. What do you think?
Even so, that income is inefficiently being wasted on a Prius and not the mortgage.
Do you really want to be known as one of these guys?
"You can't tow a Hybrid!"

Yep. I told her that. It's like when she tells me about her day. Nothingness.
See, what I wanted to do, was buy a bicycle for each of us. We'd been thinking of buying bikes for a while, and I thought we could use the 3K we got for the car to buy a couple nice bikes. Nope.
