When Prime confronted Megatron, what was Megatron staring and smiling at? I don't understand why the Dinobots where weak against Devastator and not even do a little damage on him let alone make the Constracticons disengage. The Dinobots were a huge force and sometimes hesitating missions and in season 3 they were all mushy and soft. I don't understand why?

For the first part, he spotted the conveniently carelessly abandoned gun that he eventually repeatedly shot Prime with. As for the Dinobots...I've got nothing. Maybe it was because Snarl couldn't find his way into most of the movie for some reason?

The common theory I've heard is that the Autobots were low on Energon, which is why they were so weak. Energon is everything to them. Not only does it fuel their bodies, but also their weapons and their shields. Without an adequate amount, the Autobots could not fight properly. Meanwhile, the Decepticons had an abundant supply of Energon being the dominant race at the time. So they were at the top of their game while the Autobots were at their weakest. Thus why the Decepticons were able to take out so many Autobots even though they were outnumbered.

As for season 3, that's just poor writing. New toys on the shelves means they don't have to play up the old toys.
