Toys As Investments
It still must be rough out there for investors...
Article in The Financial Post: "Toys As Investments"
They talk about collecting Transformers and even have some commentary by Brian Savage of the Transformers Collectors Club.

Re: Toys As Investments
Articles like this are stupid. This has to be one of the worst I've read. The entire article basically condones collecting to make money. Which is a horrible horrible practice. The first line in the "Transformers" section is a complete waste of time. Then it does a complete 180 in the last sentence. This article and its opinions are the equivalent of the "it was all a dream" ending.

Re: Toys As Investments
The fact that they used that shithead to talk about this is reason enough not to read it.

Re: Toys As Investments
Toy speculation is a maddening concept, as the return will never be as great as other traditional investment strategies. In fact, its a far riskier investment than most, since there's no telling what collectibles will appreciate in value, and finding them is more effort than the return will be.
Its also strange that they'd quote prices like there's some kind of regulated market guide, when in fact, every toy is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay, and that will vary wildly, even from day to day. Furthermore, citing Ebay as a source for pricing is inaccurate, as many times pricing is inflated due to the auction nature.
Meh, an article like this only shows that some people see things only in terms of dollar signs, rather than the enjoyment they bring, which when you think about it, is the real value.

Re: Toys As Investments
There are better ways to get rich me thinks. I really don't understand doing this as an investment.

Re: Toys As Investments
Honestly, I've bought and sold enough over the years to realize that if you buy something new, usually you'll have to sit on that product for at least 7-8 years to make a profit. In some(most) cases of mass market released figures you'll never see a return.
Honestly, if you are looking for an investment purchase large lots of older toys and then sell them individually.
I've thought about getting into the toy dealing game many times, but I've always come to the same conclusions
1) You'll need a large nest egg to start
2) You constantly need to be wheeling and dealing
3) There's some inventory you'll sit on FOREVER.
And finally, when you start devoting too much time and effort on something, it stops being fun.
Cheers!
