Watch out eBay entrepreneurs: online sales taxable

(CP) – 39 minutes ago

OTTAWA — The federal government says online income is taxable and has warned Internet entrepreneurs who use eBay and other web-based sales venues that they must pay up or face prosecution.

"Taxpayers should know that the tax laws that apply to traditional commerce apply in the same way to electronic commerce, like eBay selling," Revenue Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn said in a statement Thursday.

I was curious when the government was going to clue into this.

Words are cool things, the reality is that this will be a lot more difficult to enforce.

I suspect if Ottawa is serious they will pick a $$$ total to target, say several thousand dollars a year, maybe even $10,000 a year and focus on them.

While I do think that these business people are trying to cheat the system I can't see them taxing everything sold on ebay in this manner.

Guess the government started using the taxpayers money for more useful things, now they're trying to fill their own pockets again.

Re: Watch out eBay entrepreneurs: online sales taxable.

I'm not too worried right now...

I've probably made about $1000 selling on eBay this year...mostly getting rid of things we didn't need anymore before the baby came.

I'm going with the fact that they're probably going to target larger sellers at a certain price point.

Besides they have to make up the gap from the 2% GST cuts over the years somehow...perhaps even keep that ballooning deficit they keep increasing from getting worse !

My understanding is they can, and only will tax businesses or there for, ebay stores. They cannot simply expect every person to pay tax on a small or stupid private sale.

Would be like them telling me to charge tax at my garage sale because I may profit a couple bucks ?

Secondly, items would be taxed multiple times no? I buy a transformer at the store, I pay taxes. I then sell it privately on ebay for the same price yet they would expect taxes on it again ?

Re: Watch out eBay entrepreneurs: online sales taxable.

I'm pretty sure I read an article that said they are only going after those people that make $1000 a month or more on eBay and they made eBay Canada hand over the list of all the "Power Sellers" on file.

This probably won't affect anyone who is selling random old Action figures on eBay as a hobby.

Cheers!

Re: Watch out eBay entrepreneurs: online sales taxable.

They are probably after those "Power Sellers" type and companies that use eBay as a storefront, not someone who auctioned off stuffs once in a while. They simply can't follow up on every small private sales going on
