Gord Downie's The Secret Path

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yGd764YU9yc

As a father of 3 lttle children, the story of Chanie Wenjack breaks my heart.

As a Canadian, the story of what happened to children like Chanie and the families that were torn apart makes me feel shame, anger and sorrow.

As a former student at a private Catholic high school in BC where, in 1990, 3 of the "Brothers" were exposed to be relocated abusers from an Eastern orphanage (many of the victims were of First Nations heritage), Chanie's story told through Gord's courageous project stirs up ghosts that have haunted me for years.

Here and now, I am hopeful for Reconciliation with our First Nations Peoples, Reconciliation for the shameful history of the Indian Residential Schools, Reconciliation towards uniting Canada's peoples so we may never venture down those lonely train tracks ever again.

I urge you to watch the movie, listen to Gord's songs, read about what happened, visit the TRC's website and see their recommendations.

Do something or do nothing at all. Knowledge is better than ignorance.

Mods - I implore you to not take this post down. We Canadians all need to be aware so as not to let this happen ever again.

I've been following this project since it first got announced, I just recently started to buy TH albums after seeing their final show on the CBC. Sad story indeed, I didn't know any of this.

Fully Completely

Up To Here

Day For Night

Trouble At The Henhouse

Phantom Power

I recommend the above as essential Hip albums (in that order). The images of Canadiana and the injustice surrounding David Milgaard's story portrayed in the song "Wheat Kings" still leaves me breathless after all these years.

My best friend out of high school was/is Metis and was always active in his community. I never understood what he was so passionate about. I feel like I owe him an apology for trivializing what he fought so hard for all those years ago.

Re: Gord Downie's The Secret Path

I got Yer Favorites first, then Fully Completely (deluxe) because it was cheap. But I want to get Trouble at the Henhouse (the album which first introduced me to the band in the 90s, thanks to my roommate at the time), and Phantom Power, which I've rented twice at the library since September! lol

Re: Gord Downie's The Secret Path

"Nautical Disaster" from Day For Night is brilliant.

More spoken word than song, there's no rhyming structure, no chorus...just a stream of conscious diatribe paralleling the sinking of the Bismarck with a shattered relationship.

Re: Gord Downie's The Secret Path

Bought Day For Night, Phantom Power and Trouble At The Henhouse last weekend at HMV. All for $15! Phantom Power is my absolute favorite.
