Glad I didn't try the dos one - I might have broken something.
I broke down and used the game genie for TMNT - it was either that or melting the cartridge into a grave for a GI Joe.
But now I have no incentive for trying it again without a game genie.
Currently playing Conquest of the Crystal Palace - NES
Too bad my Wi-Fi cuts out after 10 mins of playing multiplayer and have to restart the game.
