Re: TF Con 2014 reviews/ Report

I think the biggest draw for me is the community of TF fans in one place, the artist guests, the cosplay, the guests and meeting up to collect comissions, the programming. The dealers room was never a draw for me because I can buy it all online or in the states. And like this year nothing was out when TFCON came around that I need. Everything is on pre-order.

But of course. TFCON draws different spectums of this fandom, everyone participates in their own way and will enjoy the community in thier own way.

As it should be.

While why people come as a minority vary from person to person (Even someone like me, the dealer room is quite secondary), on the larger percentage of things, about 75% of our gate entry is people gunning for that dealer room.

Again, you can never ignore numbers.

Hard to say for sure, but at their heart most of these Conventions started as toy shows once upon a time.

It is really the combination of different factors that attract the varied crowds. The vendor room in my experience, from talking with a variety of promoters, is really essential. Everything else plays off of that.

Guests & attractions are a huge part as well - heck shows like World of Wheels operate almost solely on those.

In Winnipeg we have table top gaming Cons & video gaming Cons that attract 500-1000 people each. Then we have single day toy shows that draw maybe 1000 folks, a couple anime conventions that draw 2000 - 3000 attendees and of course the big comic con in the fall that combines everything. It draws over 25,000 each year at this point.

Re: TF Con 2014 reviews/ Report

Well for me as a TFCon vet (all but that first one in Hamilton):

My typical TFCon "value" of enjoyment is roughly:
-the dealer room is still a big part for me - 50%
-voice actor guests/panels/autographs - 25%
-meeting/chatting other members/dealers - 10% (I'm not a social butterfly)
-customs and art gallery - 10%
-everything else - 5%

I didn't get to chat with everyone that I usually do this year due being tired because a stressful year at work. Plus I was only able to do the 1 day this year. I'm usually pretty low key, but moreso this year...many of you might have seen me crouched on the ground looking through bins.

Throughout the year, I do interact with several GTA members via meetups for transactions.

Sure I can buy stuff online, but I doubt I can get:

-a Mini-Con set for $5 CDN
-or a pile of weapons for $10 in a junker bin
-or a complete CYB-Unicron for $10

...shipped from members outside of the GTA or eBay. I also enjoy inspecting a figure/accessory before buying, something I can't do online.

Even if I didn't buy much, which has happened at previous TFCons, and I'm saying less than $100. The browsing and just seeing non-retail merchandise and non-North American products is where I find my value in the dealer room. Sure a picture online (or video review) tells a thousand words, but it's different holding it in your hands.

I wish I was able to attend on SUN to see the dealers change up the products, and the new SUN only dealers. It's always entertaining to see what they bring.

This is what happens when I "wing it" for TFCon.

No plan, no backup, no distict features worth a damn...

Sorry.

You're going to have to conscript a Staff Member as a bounty hunter to find me like Waldo next year.

I found you hiding in the basement with baggies of Cybertron Unicrons. Next time play with your toys at the bar!

That was my lunch break you interrupted. I was also using that time to reorganize my purchases to be stored more efficiently in my backpack. Or I could have been using that time worshipping the Dark God.....

I'm in the dealer room, hallway, or panels 90% of the time I am there. Except previous years where the autographs were downstairs in the Britannia Room, which I will still count as part of the "hallway time".

Re: TF Con 2014 reviews/ Report

Yeah, I'm a long-time member here and that was my 5th TFcon, and I'm 99% about the Dealer Room. No offense to you fine folks, but that room is the world's greatest toy store. I have no interest in voice actors, panels, nor autographs. Again, no offense meant, they just don't interest me.

Dealer room, baby!
