Re: ROTF movie homages (SPOILERS)
OH boy Meesum, where do I begin there were tons of G1 nods, hell characterwise the only ones that didn't have ties to G1 would be Mudflap, Demolishor, Scalpel, Grindor, and Sideways (though Overload was a micromaster Autobot and and Rampage a Predacon....)
Other previous TF connections include:
Energon being introduced
The concept of a Space bridge
the first Pretender (though not a 30 ft tall human...)
Insecticons
The original 13 Primes and the Falen (I know in the move it was 8 Primes with the Fallen but originally it was planned to be 13 like in the comics)
The Matrix of Leadership
Starscream and Megatron's "relationship"
Soundwave as a whole was a great G1 homage being the communications offficer, who "ejects" Ravage, and voiced by Frank Welker
Spark chambers (Jetfire rips his out, Optimus crush's the Fallen's)
Protoforms in the Nemesis (2 nods there)
Megatron getting a Tank alt mode
Optimus powerlinxing to Jetfire
the whole crazy scheme to destroy the sun and make Energon seems like a huge wacky G1 story
Optimus dying only to be brought back to life
....I could keep going
PS: I wouldn't really count seekers as a G1 nod because its a fan made term but a cool inclusion nevertheless

Re: ROTF movie homages (SPOILERS)
I didn't consider the named characters, as their personalities are vastly different to G1. But an homage is an homage, mon ami!
I didn't realize energon was introduced. Also, Meg & Starrio's realtionship was sort of in movie 1, although it was more of an 'attitude' than a relationship.
Impressive list, Chris!

I know I'm not the only one who went into a giggle fit when Megatron started pelting Starscream around with his own arm. Great entertainment at Starscream's expense.

Indeed. Both Soundwave and Ravage were pure awesome in the film. I'm really looking forward to how they will introduce his other "pets" in the film(s) to come and maybe having him fight a little too.

It's somewhat amusing knowing that Optimus has died so many times that there is an entire wiki page listing each and every death.

I have a feeling that we'll at least see Laserbeak in the next film. I'm sure Soundwave will be in TF3 regardless of whether or not Orci and Kurtzman stick with the franchise, and hopefully play a bigger role.

Re: ROTF movie homages (SPOILERS)
Here's some more homages I noticed:
-Sam's visions and knowledge of the truth was clear homage to Buster in the comics after he was downloaded the Matrix
-The college girl was a Pretender with a scorpion tail, and specifically an homage to Pretender Pincher, who was a scorpion.
-The fool twin that gets sucked into Devastator's mouth = Arblus in TF:tM
-The All-spark shards having life-giving power = TF Animated Season 2
-Only a Prime can kill The Fallen = Only an Autobot can open the Matrix of Leadership (G1)
-Prime kills Fallen and says something like "I have risen and you have fallen" = G1 "1 shall stand, 1 shall fall"
-Sam ascending to the temple of Primes = Optimus Primal's spiritual interaction with the Oracle
-a great Transformers energy source buried under a pyramid = R.i.D.
-Ravages little nano-bots that Transformed = Scraplets
-Sam found worthy by the Primes is an homage to Hi-Q being worthy of his upgrade by the Last Autobot (G1 comic)

Re: ROTF movie homages (SPOILERS)
Another 1 I'd forgotten,
Dick Cheney Jr. tells Prime & Autobots to leave Earth if the U.S. tells them to and Prime agrees = Autobots leaving Earth exiled by 1 city mayor, in G1 Megatron's Master Plan p.1

Are you joking here? That was almost comepletely identical!!!
...and you mentioning 'Barrel' is an homage to Cybertron laserbeak, as he Transformed into such shape.

Re: ROTF movie homages (SPOILERS)
The Alpha and Omega quote was originally taken from the bible, and then referenced in BW, so I don't think that the A&O used by Sam's professor should necessarily count.
