Re: Actual Winter In Vancouver Is Making People Do Crazy Things

I remember seeing a pic of myself with a snowman I had built when I was 3. This was back in 1980 when I lived in Surrey and that pic had a lot of snow.

Hahaha! If I took my rear wheel drive convertible out on it's summer tires, I'd be doing donuts by the time I reached the intersection!

It's been rough learning to use the bus. #firstworldproblems.

Re: Actual Winter In Vancouver Is Making People Do Crazy Things

It isn't even mandatory in Manitoba to have winter tires on vehicles, because we don't need them

We have had 67 centimetres fall since December 5th, second most we have ever had in a whole winter. Of course we also have the infrastructure in place to deal with such weather better than most.

I was out on foot today and noted that we haven't done much with the sidewalks yet in my neighbourhood, deeper than my knee is on some of those walkways.

Lol at bike lanes.

"Is winter really an unexpected thing in Vancouver?"

Re: Actual Winter In Vancouver Is Making People Do Crazy Things

Ya, only if you leave the lower mainland are you required to have snow/ice tires. Basically number one highway past Chilliwack or if you head up to Whister for some skiing/snowboarding. I'm sure other parts of the province do it out of necessity.

Like Robimus said, most other parts of Canada have a significant budget for snowfall. It happens so rarely now here that most municipalities don't plan for it. Most cities don't even own their own snow plow equipment. I always put on snow/ice tires more for potential black ice than snow. But I have friends who don't bother changing since it may snow once and that's it. This year is definitely an anomaly (or a sign of changing climates?).

Add to the fact that several cities are basically built on steep terrain makes it a lot more interesting commuting around. A lot of drivers just don't realize that you should never stop going up a hill....

I don't want to laugh, but imagine a real crisis.

The inserted tweets in the article were fun too.

Is winter really an unexpected thing in Vancouver?
It's enough for anyone, especially the mayor to take up crack at that point.

Are the streets still icy? Going tomorrow, I wonder if the rental car's tires will be good enough to drive up Cypress.

Re: Actual Winter In Vancouver Is Making People Do Crazy Things

Nope, rain starts this afternoon for the rest of the week. Most of it should be melted away tonight if not by tomorrow.

(FYI 20 to 30mm today. 40-50mm Tuesday. 35-45mm Wednesday) :P

Bring rain boots...

As for Cypress, you might want to confirm with the car rental that their tires are mud & snow tires:

"For the safety of all road users, Winter or M+S rated tires are mandatory for vehicles on Cypress Bowl Road at all times from October 1st to March 31st. Winter rated tires are strongly recommended during snowfall events. This regulation is by order of the BC Highways Ministry and is subject to enforcement by West Vancouver Police."

Re: Actual Winter In Vancouver Is Making People Do Crazy Things

Thanks man. Last I time went my car (Enterprise) had winter tires, I'll check tomorrow with Ace if an upgrade is necessary/possible, such an option wasn't mentioned when I made my reservation.
