Well I for one don't know how to make an app nor do I know what it requires to make an app but I would like to be in on helping with the design

couldnt you just bookmark the "sightings" thread for your area to the main iphone/i pod touch screen? thats how ive been doing it for months now.

Something that formatted the board to mobile screen width and stripped the photos (to keep data usage down) would still have utility

I don't know if maybe just having a mobile front end for the site would be doable or not, but it would be more platform-agnostic than an i-app, a blackberry app and an android app

I think just an app for the sightings would be good, and maybe later we can make one for the whole website.
