Re: Star Wars Discussion (The Last Jedi Spoilers Within!)

Honestly, how they handled Luke was pretty terrible to me. This character was like my biggest fictional hero for basically my entire life, and they ruined him.

It is kinda like how Transformers fans howled when Michael Bay turned Prime into a cold blooded killer.

Luke turning his back on his family and friends due to a failed student, which in turn allows said student to murder millions including Han - it is hideous. Him thinking of killing Kylo due to Kylo having dark thoughts was frankly crazy. Even him telling Leia that Kylo can't be saved(when Rey tried to bring him back to the light), is so out of character for Luke.

This is a character who threw down his lightsaber in the face of certain death to stick to his principles and show the love of a father he never even knew.

But he apparently couldn't handle a sixteen year old kid getting tempted by the darkside...............

That said, if you don't feel as strongly as I do about Luke I can see how folks could feel the movie works. What they did with the Luke arc in the film was well done for what it was - it just goes completely against eveything we know about the character.

We never saw Luke age in the movies. Lots of stuff can happen to a man during his 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s...

It shows what happened. His teenage nephew got tempted by the darkside and his knee jerk reaction was to creep on him while he was sleeping and consider cutting him in half.

I too didn't like how the Luke character was handled in certain parts. Some of the lines and mannerisms didn't fit to his character in some scenes. Throwing the saber in that way was ridiculous. The shoulder brush was out of character. "I failed you, Ben. I'm sorry". "See you around, kid". So not Luke-like dialogue.

Blue milk lol. Clearly some scenes were there to get laughs but I didn't find them funny at all. More awkward or out of place. I did like the 3P0 wink though. His interaction with Leia and Yoda were perfect IMO.

So some good and bad. I do believe he uses a new saber with a reddish tint in the hilt? I need one of those. Hope Disney makes one.

Re: Star Wars Discussion (The Last Jedi Spoilers Within!)

I too think the way they handled Luke's character was totally off. Of course, my subjective opinion, but I now know why Hamill had serious reservations and why he was quite vocal about his character direction leading up to the release.

Also, I could possibly do without the whole Leia Superman flying bit...

The humour was overreaching and generally off at times (my opinion).

I also didn't like both main story arcs:
1) The "slow-chase-and-wait-till-the-rebels-run-out-fuel" story arc was silly and,
2) Finn and Rose's, DJ's casino story arc - still unsure what the whole point of that was... Just a thought, if they were able to outrun the attack and seek the codemaster, why not jump on a transport and fetch fuel? Whatever...

Also, I thought the pacing of the movie was off, it kept jumping back/forth from scene to scene and didn't feel as coherent as the TFA.

It's almost as though the movie takes over the top risks to compensate for all the "rehash" criticisms that the TFA received. But, it'll still make a gazillion dollars...

And Snoke is so not dead...

I read a lot of nerd rage about Luke...how he decided to run away and hide and did nothing to help.

Look...Jedi masters don't get to retire and live happily ever after. Look at what happened to Obi Wan and Yoda. They both decided to exile and hide... They both didn't do much to train and prepare Luke. I guess it's a trend for all Jedi masters to train future bad guy and then hide from their own shame and sense of failure....LOL

I'm also highly critical of both Yoda's and Obi-Wan's behaviour throughout the saga.

But their goal in hiding was to eventually train Luke or Leia to overthrow the Sith. They had a long term plan with the greater good in mind.(Granted, they manipulated Luke a lot and at no time had his best interests at heart - which is why it was awesome when Luke disobeyed them to do what was right in ESB).

Palpatine badically had a 20-30 year long plan to conquer the galaxy, and Yoda/Obi countered that plan with some long term planning of their own.

But we didn't see any of the events leading to that, nor we saw what happened right after until SW7...

I don't understand what you are looking for exactly. Luke himself explained everything, alongside the flashbacks.

I mean we could reimagine it anyway we want if we are choosing our own adventure. Real Luke could have been killed, replaced by a clone Luke anf clone Luke carried forward in the story.

The film itself was quite clear in explaning how things went.

I think the "I failed you, Ben. I'm sorry" line was a play on this.

And the "See you around, kid" line is what Ben would have said to Luke before giving him one last look.
