2012 was the worst year to be a Transformers Collectors because third parties realized how much we are willing to pay, and have started offering bigger/more expensive items accordingly.

2012 was the BEST year to be a collector because Takara lined up a bunch of hawt MPs and reissued desirables like Sixshot, Devastator and announced Fort Max, FOC was an incredible game seemingly made for guys like us, TFCon was amazing, Shapeways opened new opportunities for us and the third party created some of the best figures ever made...

2012 was a horrible year to be a transformers fan because we got fun new releases like the GDO figures, FOC Combaticons, great Prime figures like Dreadwing and Thundertron, new Masterpieces, announcement of a Fort Max reissue, the reveal of some cool new beasts in the Beast Hunters line, and a great game in the FoC.
Seriously, 2012 wasn't anywhere near as bad as folks want to believe.

No, it's about the same as in previous years. That is, after the internet was developed. 
I also stipulated "mainline" for a reason. Sure there are many other transformers out there; Kreo, Bot Shots, 3rd party, but if you are mainline collector like me, it's a bummer.
