Re: What are some of your favorite Halloween movies?

Halloween movies? Hmm...

Beetlejuice is right up there at the top. It more or less embodies Halloween, I mean, its a bit fun, a bit weird, a bit scary, a bit dark, a bit surreal, a bit real, a bit childish, involves the topic of being something you're not, and trying not to take itself seriously while trying to take itself seriously.

See, Halloween isn't just about scares and thrills, its also about silly stupid fun, a big reason Tim Burton does that sort of thing so well. Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, they've all got the same sort of essence that just screams Halloween to me.

Then there's Coraline, which is a nice and dark fairy-tale, but not so dark and creepy that it drives away the audience it targets.

Army of Darkness is just some good old-fashioned fun "scary" adventure comedy movie.

Event Horizon.... I've only ever seen this ONCE, despite owning the DVD. Still working up the nerve to pop it back in to watch. Its a sci-fi ghost story set on a spaceship. A sort of Dead Space before Dead Space.

While not visual, I'll pop in the 1938 War of the Worlds broadcast to listen to for Halloween.

Shaun of the Dead's almost a requirement for the season, as is 28 Days Later. (and I guess 28 Weeks Later, but that just wasn't as "good").

John Carpenter's The Thing. Watch it.

Van Helsing is pretty much Halloween distilled down to its roots and blended with a TV Dinner topped with Cheese Whiz, with varying results.

Stir of Echoes. Go watch this. It needs more viewings.

Ghostbusters 1 and 2, more required Halloween viewing. (and the Video Game as GB3)

Scream and Scary Movie seem a bit cliche, but they're the better ones of their franchises.

An American Werewolf in Paris is a great Halloween movie.

Dusk Till Dawn and Bordello of Blood make for a pretty nice back-to-back viewing.

I guess the Sixth Sense (though it never really felt Halloween to me)

And finally, Hocus Pocus. I know its a children's movie, but still more decent than many of the B movies people watch. Team it up with the first Scooby Doo movie and make a drinking game out if it.

Heavy Metal would work, as would The Dark Crystal.

This year, I plan on playing a little bit of Dead Space (for the first time ever, I'm expecting The Thing in space mixed with Event Horizon), Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines, or whatever that Call of Cthulhu game is I have on Steam. And L4D 1 and 2.

But then I might just end up venturing into the Dunwich building and Point Lookout in Fallout 3 for some creepy fun.

edit:
Then there's the movie Signs, but really only that one scene leading up to and including the birthday party in Mexico on the news.
