Interesting. Although Pete has been quite adamant that it's not "3rd party" ban, but "IP Infringement" ban.
What is the difference?
Nobody knows.

Didn't this happen last year too? They still had 3P there I thought.

I remember hearing about this last year as well IIRC where they had a team of people confiscating it or something. Well I have never and probably will never go to a BotCon anyway. TF Con is good enough for me

The term 3rd party is being mis-used by the fandom. Actual 3rd party refers to fully licensed products, like the Sentinel Megazarak action figure, Ultimetal Optimus Prime, Hot Toys' upcoming Optimus Prime figure, the various Loyal Subjects TF vinyl figures. These are all officially Transformer branded products, but since their not made by Hasbro or Takara, their considered "3rd party".
The items we call 3P, like MMC or Fansproject products, are its own category. These products obviously do not have any license from Hasbro, and what Pete is referring to as "IP infringement". I know the makers of these products, like FP and MMC, want it be categorized as "Independent" instead of "3rd party". We talked about this at a couple conventions. But its up to the fandom to make the wording change, if they are able to.

Well put. Sadly the fandom as a whole isn't smart enough for that.

There's also a few 3P figures that aren't directly based on a Hasbro/Takara character, which wouldn't technically be IP infringement.
