Re: Disney buys Marvel

As an admitted Marvel fanboy, I'm a bit worried.

In the short term it's going to be business as normal, but I'm concerned about Disneyfication or Disney creative control creep as time goes on.

I'm hoping they just leave Marvel at arm's length like they do with some of their other production companies, but given Marvel's comic and toy marketing strength, I suspect it will just be another vector to market Disney products - and I'm sure Disney won't look well upon properties like The Punisher and other MAX titles.

I think this could be a good thing, sure there will be some growing pains, but Disney is huge and will only add to Marvels reasources.

Re: Disney buys Marvel

I think the big issue will be if Disney tries to impose its bureaucracy and "ethics" on Marvel. Any impact on marvel's editorial and content policies could be disastrous for marvel, especially considering if DC can then better capture the mature comic fan market.

Furthermore, it may impact where, how, and if marvel properties are turned into movies, television shows (would they be disney channel exclusives?), and merchandising. It could be a big problem if marvel licenses were limited to the same marketing strategy that Disney uses for many of their own licenses.

I think in the end Disney is going to get a lot more out of this than Marvel.

Re: Disney buys Marvel

I highly doubt that the Disney Parks will see any Marvel cross-promotion. No rides, No characters. I think sadly that Comics, as we know historically, will eventually be a thing of the past and Marvel probably understands it, so why not be bought out by the biggest distributer of all forms of entertainment.

Marvel didn't really need any help 'staying afloat', though. By all accounts they were doing great business and had diversified by starting their own production company in recent years (recent animated releases and Iron Man were produced by Marvel rather than getting farmed out to another company like Sony or Fox - Avengers and Thor will (were?) also going to be produced by Marvel), and producing their own toys (until the Hasbro deal...).

It does mean they have the larger Disney corporate shield, but did they actually need it?

Hulk-School Musical!

Seriously, I think this is a sad day for Marvel fans. As of now, I don't know if I'll be watching Spiderman 4 when it comes out.
Not that they haven't made enjoyable stuff, but I'm not a fan of Disney's real-life corporate policies and such, not to mention some of the early-age racism charges against them.
