Question: Is the double unit "top heavy"? With the addition of the tall legs, do you need to anchor it? Or can it free stand say... in the middle of a room?
Damn good work my friend.

I haven't had any issues with it being top-heavy, but I'm not sure I'd be comfortable having it free-stand in the middle of the room.
I have no anchors on mine, but I have my display up against the wall, and I adjust the front legs a little bit so that the entire unit leans backwards a couple of degrees. Just so that, if it happens to topple in any direction, it would be backwards towards the wall.forwards.

Re: Custom double-Detolfs
wall anchors are free at ikea (easily acquired since that wardrobe incident), might as well put them on if they are against the wall.

Location: That's a good question.

Re: Custom double-Detolfs
This is really slick. I would recommend either some kind of anchor, or ballast in the bottom of the units. Those glass doors have some heft to them, and if you open both doors fully, I would wager if you pull slightly on the top of the unit, it may tip if empty.

Re: Custom double-Detolfs
You should start commissioning kits and sell them.... I'm sure alot of people would be interested, cuz it looks amazing.

Yeah, Detolf units normally come with anchors.
I've never put any on them; neither when they were stock-Detolfs, nor after I modded them to be doubles. The doors are slightly heavy, but I've never had an issue with the weight or balance of the units.
AND, as a side note, Ikea is using thinner glass panels for the sides when compared to my older units from years ago.

Thanks for the compliments.
I thought about making more and selling, but as of now, my process isn't streamlined nor precise enough. I mean, I already work with a template rather than measuring each time, but the holes aren't drilled through as cleanly as I'd like them to be, and there's always been a little bit of adjustment needed each time while going through the assembly process.

Re: Custom double-Detolfs
I like the idea of 'raising' the detolf, so the bottom two shelves get some love, too. The door 'crack' still gets in the way when viewing head-on, unfortunately, but the detolfs are definitely the best 'bang for your buck' as was said before.

Re: Custom double-Detolfs
I really like the whole raised up idea as well.
This is my set up. Wondering if I should make legs or a base for those 3 to raise them up. I also have been considering switching to l.e.d instead of those pucks in the Detolfs. After I added the l.e.d. to the shelves, it makes a difference. Those pucks kinda suck

But it looks like you just used the doors to the Detolfs, and nothing else?

Yeah, raising the Detolfs help give visibility to the lower two shelves, which are usually the "neglected" ones.
I mean, my lowest shelf is still somewhat designated to the "lesser" toys, but raising everything by ~6" already makes the 3rd level much more visible.
