Duty / tax when buying online

Hi guys,

Newly returning to Canada from a decade of working in Hong Kong... so bros here mentioned buying online (thanks guys) is usually the practice people has...

my question is, do we need to pay duty for the imports? GST/PST being due on arrival is normal... but import duty?

From the USA it's just sales tax (13% in Ontario) plus whatever fee the carrier charges. Canada Post (from US Postal Service) charges a $10 fee. FedEx and UPS charge a *lot* more, avoid. Not sure about Purolator or others.

I've never been hit with anything other than the 13% + $10 fee when using Canada post, and usually only get hit with that if it's from the US, or if a fast and insured shipping method was used. I've never been hit with anything from Japan when choosing the 3 week slowest and cheapest shipping method. NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE UPS THOUGH!!!! Then you're probably looking at a 40% of declared value fee regardless.

Just use the regular postal services like mentioned above, you won't get nailed very often

I've never been hit with duty or taxes when we are talking about items coming in from Hong Kong. The problem I often get is that my items are caught in the customs system way to long. It stays in there for days until it gets released...again, with the PC-05 feet from Perfect Effect, I'm up to 6 days now at the customs in Mississauga....unbelievable...
