Too funny. I did the exact same thing when I got back into collecting again. There was the cost of gas but I used to get frustrated about the waste of time too. Sometimes full evening were wasted driving around looking for things that hadn't been there in months. Ahhh...the early days of collecting.

Re: Will you over pay to make sure you get something?
The Toy Trove prices are in Canadian $$$, so at least there is cost certainty there, without a fluctuating exchange rate. You could pre-order the figures there for $115 CDN plus shipping and taxes. I have bought a number of figures from The Toy Trove -- great to deal with.
Even comparing your estimate of $160 pre-order vs. $130 retail, that is about $6 per figure. Pre-order saves a bit of the hassle of time and travel trying to find the figures at retail. It might be worth the $$ from 1 extra Jr.A game to know you'll be getting the Combaticons, especially since you know you want them so much.

Re: Will you over pay to make sure you get something?
I got thrown a couple extra shifts so I was able to put in my order early.
I decided to go with Toy Trove because as others said, they have their stuff all in Canadian prices, and frankly, they were the cheapest! They were also the only place that was offering CW Shockwave individually. Most others you could only buy all 4 new legends together.
It cost $161 and change for all 5 Combatacons and Shocky, which is pretty good. Like I said initially, it would cost about $130 to get them all in store, and the extra $30 is easily what I would spend driving around trying to find them all.
