My daughter saw it earlier this year, she's 5 years and 10 months right now. Neither the one swear word nor Optimus' death affected her.

Re: At what age can you watch the 1986 Transformers movie?

I was 11 when I saw it in '86.

My son is 3 1/2 and he's already seen EVERY TF series, including TF:TM.

Re: At what age can you watch the 1986 Transformers movie?

We live in a world with far more desensitizing media than 1980's movies, some of the stuff today would not be accepted in the 80's yet kids watch it today. Like the the Bigscreen TF movies, Bay turned OP into a murderous killing machine and he was never like that in G1. G1 OP had morals and never outright killed another cybertronian.

Thankfully, my daughter has never seen the Bay movies and she actually has to ask me when she sees a toy of the Bayformers OP in the stores

I saw it when I was five.

I used Ultra Magnus as an excuse for my saying "dammit" for years... =)

Re: At what age can you watch the 1986 Transformers movie?

Thanks everyone for answering. I guess I'm a bit old fashioned, I was 12 when the 1986 movie came out so I really didn't know how old other people were when they first saw it. I guess now I have to work on the wife to get him to see it. An epic, albeit low-key and polite, battle is in my future.

I also found it interesting other's thought on the Death of Prime. I don't remember being particularly traumatized by it, but then I was 12. I think everyone's right, the impact was probably greater when G1 was the only game in town and Prime a father figure. Even my son knows there are lots of other versions/ takes on Transformers and G1 prime is just one of them, the impact will probably be a bit less now.

My first introduction to the Movie was actually the comic adaptation. Everyone is right that the movie just suggests this, but that scene is etched, wrongly as it turns out, in my mind.

Optimus Prime is DEAD!!!! WTF, when did this happen I just saw him in a movie last month.

Well I was 21 when I saw it, don't wait that long

Definitely too old according to my old GF at that time.

If he's watched the series you can't stop now!

Re: At what age can you watch the 1986 Transformers movie?

Bare in mind that when we were watching G1, commercials and all...we had season 1 and 2 on repeat 5 times a week, for almost 2 years. For a child that's an eternity.

Raised with that many eps, along with hours and hours and hours of playing with G1 toys with friends and family.

It kinda gets cemented in our heads that our heroes are immortal.

Then the movie came along and shattered that stability.

Sure your kid(s) may have watched G1 once through on your DVDs, and played with your G1s carefully and under supervision. But it will not have the same mental impact when watching the 86 movie.

Re: At what age can you watch the 1986 Transformers movie?

I don't know, my son took notice when Optimus was lying on that table.
He pointed and said "Optimus hurt" with concern in his voice. Then the same when he died and seeing Daniel break down crying he said "He sad. He sad for Optimus".

So even at 3 he was somehow effected by the emotion of the scene, but probably not as much as we, the G1 generation were when it happened.
