Don't diss on Macs if you're going in arts or you'll spend more time complaining than anything. Believe me, I've been there. One year in Graphical Arts over at the Cégep in Sherbrooke. Now I'm in languages, trying to become an English teacher (and to help publish my books while keeping a relatively awesome job).

Re: The Montreal/Quebec Local Fans Banter Thread

Sorry for not saying anything sooner, I was at the hopistal since tuesday night...

It's too late now but the sale was happening at non-liquidating Zellers.

Off the top of my head, Angrignon and Place Bourassa are "regular" Zellers.

Liquidating ones are Alexis-Nihon, Place Vertu (off the top of my head)

Oh, I love graphic design but only as a hobby. Doing it as a job would kill it for me. Keep up the dream!

that's what my dad does for a living. I myself don't have any fancy diploma or degree but I got a fairly stable job that pays enough to feed my addiction AND affords me plenty of time to read

Ive just been thinking lately do i really want all this stress of reading hard material and writing even harder essays? So im looking for a discipline thats a little less demanding, but also i dont want to restart from scratch.

I remeber studying communications and i absolutely loved my film classes. What are these changes you mentioned?
In general the Film Studies field (and many other disciplines) are leaning toward cultural theory (though many communications faculties were already like that), and away from actual textual analysis of films as art. I'm not crazy about that, myself but it is part of the flow towards interdisciplinary approaches in academia (which in turn runs the risk of becoming uni-disciplinary). However, if you're coming from communications and philosophy, that may not be a big issue. The level of reading can still be quite complex (bordering on obscurantism); DeLeuze and Homi Bhabha are not faves of mine. Concordia's grad program has very heavy Theory angle, even if the undergrad program is still fairly focused on Formalism.

I think Philosophy can be quite tough, for the reasons you mentioned. The plus side is that it can be re-applied to many other fields. The down side is that nobody cares about a degree in Philosophy (though I do have a friend who teaches ethics at CEGEP, with a Phd in Philly.

The truth is that PC's can be just as good for media work, but the industry is very much on a Mac standard. I did Fine Arts back in my undergrad... though not so much digital that I actually had to use Macs thank goodness. I usually finished my day with turpentine or charcoal all over my hands.

Hey, if you can do it, good on ya. There's a whole lot of BAD graphic designers out there with jobs, so someone has to fight the good fight!

Seriously? I hope all is well now, bud!

I didn't find Kreo advertised at 40% off at Alexis-Nihon, but the combined reductions and 30% off the top amounted to about the same.

That's what I had for the past 7 years... a comfortable, laid-back job running a small video store that kept me in movies and robots. Well, looking at the writing on the wall, I decided it was a good idea to go back to school and get myself an education upgrade. Hopefully it will pay off, and I can get another modest, comfortable, laid back job that will last me the rest of my days. Fingers crossed.

What do you do? It's funny, I know some of you by sight, some of you by screen-name, but I don't really know much about the local TF fans. In my experience, we're quite a mixed crowd.

Oh... and as an aside, anybody else putting together a costume for Halloween? Got a party tonight, and I'm not finished quite yet (I make something every year). How about you folks?

I can't speak to gaming, but film studies is going through some changes as a discipline lately (also depends on what school you go to, I imagine). What aspects of Philosophy were getting you down?

Due to an early trauma, Nick can't do mods or customizations. His hands start shaking, he gets flashbacks to Cybertron (the toy line, not the place) and his ears are full of the screams of mutilated toys.

I on the other hand, have grown deaf to such screams long ago.

To be honest, when I swapped the parts on my Heavy Labor, I was surprised to find that there were so many steps for what should have been a pretty simple parts swap. Still nothing compared to getting Neckbreaker's chest open though... one of those things that requires you do disassemble every OTHER part of the figure, before you can free up the chest. Groan.

This. But what's this about Neckbreaker? Is he defective or are you Zac-ing him up?

P.S. School's for nerds.

EDIT:...and computers.
