Re: Bugs...

In terms of the Hymenopterans, I usually give them a free pass. Bees are awesome, generally non-agressive, make honey (which is an amazing substance in itself), and are generally fun to watch.

Ants (although they continuously make a giant superhive in my backyard every year, and hell, even that's a respectable level of tenacity) pretty much invented agriculture, are, again, amazing creatures capable of fantastic feats of engineering.

Giant hornets are pretty cool probably because I've never had to deal with one, but wasps and yellowjackets can screw right off. What purpose do they even serve, other than buzzing around my drink or attacking me when I go to put something in the garbage? They don't make honey, hell, do they even have any predators? They're horrible.

Hard to disagree with this...

Forgot one though

Odonata (Dragonflies) - Another cool harmless group that has the most awkward way to conceive in the animal kingdom.

I've been bitten by one before and it hurts like a bitch.

But yeah, they're pretty cool to watch and have a weirdass sex life.

The ones I've had this year are even weirder than the ones from previous years. Normally, when you smoosh 'em, they make a smear full of still-wiggling legs, but the 2009 models running around my neck of the woods disintegrate into dust, like they're freakin' vampire centipedes. It's unsettling and unnatural it is. (Shivers.)

Re: Bugs...

I don't mind most bugs, but spiders kinda freek me out. Small ones are fine, it's when they get big.

I also hate Botflies. If you don't know what a Botfly is, just youtube it and watch one of those extraction videos. They deposit eggs into you. The larvae hatches and lives under your skin. Disgusting.

There is something much worse about Botflies. They can carry parasites within them that get transfered to you when they lay the egg in your or even just bite you.

On parasite in particular multiplies in your blood stream and literally eats your heart slowly over time. The only treatment is to regularly get heart transplants. There is no way to remove the parasite from your bloodstream at this time, or to kill the parasite without killing you in the process.

So once you're infected with it, you need heart transplants every few years until you die.

Yet another reason I want to live in a sterile bubble.

Re: Bugs...

June bugs are a gross annoyance. Those things could knock you out cold if one threw itself at your head. And I hate opening a door on summer nights to find the screen completely covered in the things. Then there's the task of having to walk to the car and stepping on them the whole way. Yuck!
And Earwigs... Don't get me started on earwigs!
