Does it still count as "trap and release" if you trap them with a boot/shoe/kleenex and release them into the garbage/toilet? Because if so, I do that too.

I remember when I was younger I caught a fly in a jar and kept him as a pet for a while.

Another creepy bug story: We were living in Edmonton at the time, walking to the grocery store from our apartment. We see this thing up in front of us on the side walk (we assumed it was a rock). Said rock starts to move. We get a little closer, and a tarantula is walking down the sidewalk. We promptly move to the other side of the street. Those things scare me when they are behind glass at the pet store, but to see one free like that... damn.

Re: Bugs...

People are going to think I am crazy, but I like bugs a lot.

Here are some examples:

- I work in a garage and I actually walk around spiders and other bugs so I don't step on them. I even once found a lady bug and took it outside so it would not get hurt

- I like spiders, infact, I welcome them in my house? You know why? Cause spiders EAT and actively hunt mosquitoes. Now which would you rather have while your sleeping. The loner spider who minds his own business at 3AM on his web or those damn mosquitoes eating you alive and leaving you an ichy red bump to bug you the rest of the day?

- I am a bug fan of The Tick and Kamen Rider (the comic book/cartoon series) and thus can't have any dislike for said bugs related to em either =P

Re: Bugs...

All insects are disturbing, disgusting, and definitely not surviving in my house.

The only insect I can't kill is the Wasp, I refuse to antagonize it or go anywhere NEAR it, it scares the shit out of me. If I see a wasp anywhere, outside, at the mall, waiting for the bus, on the bus, I will freeze up and become tense. If I'm walking home, I will dash, run away.

They say sudden movements instigate attack patterns in Wasps, I say I've never been attacked for running like a fricken' freight train was about to run me over.

Anything in the basement or my bedroom is so much squashed bug guts. Unless the Spider's manage to escape into the little nooks and cranies, but my philosophy is this... As long as you aren't on my ceiling, dropping down from my ceiling or generally in the vincinity of any ceilings I.E climbing the walls, I won't kill you. I can't stand a spider being above me, too many stories about how as we sleep we eat spiders because they crawl into our open mouths... F*** I do not want to hear that shit.

I have never been close to a Black Widow, Tarantula or Scorpion, aside from my Beast Wars inorganic plastic toys and have no interest in ever seeing one if I have my way.

Silverfish, those things infest our house, or at least they do depending on the summer heat, this summer it wasn't so bad. Those things I'll kill no questions asked. I try not to kill ladybugs, but it was in the sink and the water rushing down destroyed it, not my fault.

Mosquitos do not get a free pass, nor do flys, I will stalk them mercilessly until they are dead, because those are the two most annoying insects of all, and you want to know why? They always ALWAYS buzz my fricken ears while I'm sleeping, thus propogating the wake up in the middle of the night and stay up for an hour trying to kill the bastard.

We never use our front door, I checked it recently and got the shock of a lifetime... it was partially covered over in cobwebs. Freaked me out a little.

Centipedes are annoying, but I don't see too many of them, one of them fell down on me while I was playing a game in the recliner. Now whenever I play my Wii downstairs I refuse to sit in the chair again, stupid thing, I liked that recliner, but as soon as it got trapped in the seat cushion. F**k it.

In short, I hate bugs, to the point that Wasps induce paranoid responses as do any six legged or eight legged creatures which startle me, te absolute worst was when I finally decided maybe watching Arachnaphobia wasn't such a bad idea. As soon as the credits rolled a fricken spider dropped off the ceiling and landed on my bed.

Swore off that movie for life, and this time I'm sticking to that.

Re: Bugs...

Any bug in my house gets a safe escort outside. Any bug outside will not die by me, unless I do not see it under my feet, though most of the time I am watching where I am stepping.

My friend's roommate, the one with the Black Widows and Scorpions and Tarantulas, he is an odd one. He let the Female Black Widow out of it's container, and let it crawl all up and down his arm... And then it let it on the floor and damn, can those things JUMP! My friend, who was behind me at the time, clinging to my shoulders with painful gripping force shreiked when she saw the Black Widow jump, and suddenly her painful grip on my shoulders became a death grip, combined with her almost throwing me at the spider! It was quickly caged after that.

Here is a vid of this guy I am talking about, and his Pet Widow.

Re: Bugs...

I have only ever been stung by a wasp once. Never stung by a bee.

The horrible thing was that it happened indoors, on a wooden stairway, completely randomly.

I was stung on my toe several times by the same wasp, which found its way into my sock through a hole on the bottom of my foot as I was standing on the steps.

So obviously I have no direct use for nature.

I hate flies. they carry whatever they've landed on with them on their feet, which is most likely rotting fecal matter. Think about that the next time you eat a sandwich that a fly has landed on. My worst issue is if I ever see a fly in a restaurant. I lose my appetite, since that fly could have landed on any piece of food at any point right after crawling around on or in the garbage.

Mosquitoes carry diseases such as Lime Disease, West Nile Virus, and many other nasty parasites and viruses. And for all you people out there, do NOT take west nile virus lightly. I know people who were reduced so weak that they could no longer walk, feed themselves, talk, or even hold their head up. recovery for those people is VERY slow. Almost a year later and they were up to lifting their arms enough to hold up a pencil for a minute or two, and talking for a couple of minutes before being completely drained. West Nile Virus can completely fuck you up.

Ants invade and nest within walls. This isn't so much of a problem until they start dying en mass. Plus, they venture out into Human living spaces in search of food. On top of that, carpenter ants burrow through wood to make their nests, which weakens a building's structure.

Earwigs get everywhere they shouldn't.

Bees, bumble or otherwise, do provide honey and pollination, and are generally non-violent. I just hope they stay the hell away from me.

Fruit flies are a nuisance, and they're small enough to be really hard to kill. Plus they can fit through screens, which really pisses me off.

edit: Damnit. I was stung on my frickin foot while it was in my frickin sock. Nature hates me to the point of rediculousness.

Re: Bugs...

Well there are many members of the arthropod phylum only a few all into the insecta family, from the sounds of it many here hate the chilopoda family...centipedes....thats understandable but they aren't true insects as their morphology is inclusive. Following that logic crustacea are also bugs...mmmmmm water spiders

Now certain orders that are actually in the insecta class we can make some nice comparisons of....

Orthoptera (Grasshopper/crickets) - Who didn't catch these as kids? Not to mention they're relatively harmless...

Phasmida (Stick bugs) - I'm sorry these are too cool

Blattaria (Cockroaches) - Burn them, send them to hell

Heteroptera (True bugs, assassin bugs, leaf hoppers) - More harmless ones, the assassin bugs are pretty cool but the leaf hoppers look adorable up close

Coleoptera (Beetles) - I got no problems with them....most of them have cool colours and shells...not to mention some of them are huge. Easily the most diverse order....

Hymenoptera (Bees, Wasps, and Ants) - kind of a grey area....some ants are cool....though I was attacked by a group of fire ants....bees can be cool too, I remember going nuts trying to catch a iridescent blue one but he was fast. Either way you leave them alone, they leave you alone.

Lepidoptera (Butterflies) - I got no issues with them but I'm still curious as to the admiration women give them....I guess cuz they're pretty...

Diptera (Flies, Mosquitoes) - ....they're annoying....and don't even look cool up close...but essential

There is only one thing I have to say to that... Wipe them out, all of them. (Yeah I know nature would be no more if all the bugs/insects and related specie were to just suddenly be killed off, but still, life would be easier without these little things.)

I beg to differ. I've seen many wasps and hornets in my time actively attack a garden hose repeatedly, randomly right out of the blue, and on numerous occasions at different locations.

Now for something to just suddenly attack an inanimate object viciously, tirelessly, and without remorse it requires the killer instinct and some amount of mental / emotional instability. Given that it was not an individual wasp or hornet that took part in each of these events, I'm inclined to say that hornets are vicious killers.

Plus, there's something really creepy about a bug that can also cut a hole into a small dead rodent, crawl inside under its skin and cut off chunks of meat to bring back to its hive. I've seen instances where the skin of a dead mouse or rat or whatever it was is actually gyrating and moving around because of a half dozen hornets crawling under its skin.

On a similar note, this is my nemesis. These things absolutely scare me to my very core. Cthulhu level of insane fear and comprehension that they exist

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDSf3Kshq1M

this second version is better quality, but is not in english.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQQk_...eature=related

For those that are squeemish and don't want to watch the video, it can be summed up by imagining the brutality of the movie 300 except for these main differences:

- the events filmed are real
- the battle only takes 3 hours to complete
- the Spartans are hornets and the Persians are bees
- there are only 30 Spartans
- the Spartans are 5 times the size of the Persians
- the Spartans are the ones who invade Persia
- no Persians survive

Since I learned of these things, I never want to set foot anywhere near Japan.

Oh, I forgot to mention that their sting has been described as feeling like you have just been shot.

And on top of that they spray powerful acid into your eyes (deliberately aiming for your eyes) that attracts other giant hornets and sends them into a bloodthirsty rage.

They are the snakes to my Indy.
