A VERY different kind of Wanted thread. Ps3 related

Ok, so I got the infamous YLOD and my Ps3 is kaput. I've tried glickskys open the system, clean the heatsink pads and add thermal compound onto the CPU/GPU and heat it all up trick. I re-assembled everything back properly and it didn't work. Turns on but then the yellow light then red and you get the idea.
So then I tried the hairdryer approach. Heated from the back, upsidedown, in the Ps3 box for 15min than cool with a fan for 20min. Still no. So I then heated it again for 15 min to just try it again and no.
So this morning I opened it up and took a wiff of the Power Supply and I think that is the actual problem.
Soooo...Anyone know where I can get my hands on a Ps3 80gig Power Supply? I cant find any listings on Ebay but I would prefer to find someone local or at least iin Canada.

Help Appriciated. All I really want is my saved game data. I know I saved it recently but I only have 3/4 of my memory sticks and I think the missing one has the current saves...just can't find it.
Plus if I do fix my Ps3, well that's a bonus.

Thanks for any help.

Site only has a power supply for 20 or 60 gig and I have an 80gig. Not sure if they are interchangable.

I looked up PS3 repairs in Hamilton and their looks to be quite a few places/people that repair PS3s. You said the supply smelled, could you describe the smell? (Sickly sweet smell or more of a burning electrical smell.)

If you wanted to post a fairly high res picture of the power supply board I might be able to tell you if it's bad or not.

I think more of a sweet smell than a burning to be honest. I'm not at home so i'll have to check later. Playstation forums someone said I wouldnt be able to power my machine at all if the power supply was dead so I am gonna try the heat gun again. Who knows, maybe i'll get lucky. All I need is max 5hrs to do a full backup or and hour to backup the saved games and a couple vids. I bought a new one so I dont care if I get minimal life out of this one. Had it for years anyway.
Sadly though, my Ps2 NEVER died and still works...same with the N64. Too bad the new tech Ps3/Xbox wont hold up.

Actually it isn't the tech as much as it's the soldering process they used to attach the gpu/cpu to the circuit board. Nvidia had a similar problem with the 8000 series of videocards.

Glad to here you bought a new one, even if the heatgun method works it's usually only a short term fix.

Well, after a few heatgun attempts I managed to get it up and running and am currently doing a full Data Transfer to my new PS3. REALLY hope it works. Thanks for the help though.
