Re: Platinum Trypticon...wtf happened?

If the 3 little Insecticons came out for $100+ initially, getting Trypticon for less than $200 is a steal.

Re: Platinum Trypticon...wtf happened?

Why we didn't see a general retail release? May be because no one wanted to pick a big ticket item like the Platinum Trypticon? May be, like the others have pointed out retailers didn't want to see another shelf-warmer?

If you think it was bad here the Japanese got 300 units only and you had to won a lucky draw to be 1 of the 300. On the other hand they are not dino-crazy, though.

I got one from amazon.ca and got cash back twice after it decreased the price tag before Trypticon was sold out (or the remaining stocks being allocated to the States?).

I still haven't opened mine because the new packaging looks awesome

About $90. So about 2.25 times the 1985 price.

Regular price of a loaf of bread in 1985 was about $1. Now, it's about $3.

So, Trypticon going for original price ($70) x 2.3 = $160 might not be wholly outrageous.

Re: Platinum Trypticon...wtf happened?

It's not Hasbro's first shit show, nor will it be the last. The fact is this: Hasbro never intended this toy to be sold at 200 bux. Did Target in the States ever get it?...I would guess not. Since all the sellers on Amazon are secondary market, it's no surprise that they mark it up substantially. That's too bad, as I'm not so big a fan as to pay 200 for it. Perhaps they'll come to their senses at some point and re-release with a sane price. Either way, I won't be crushed. But it would be nice to own one...especially if they release Scorponok at some point, reissued, down the line.

Hmmm...perhaps, and this is kinda reaching, they didn't want a Platinum product competing with their Generations product which should be released later in the year?

If you zoom in on the Sears1985 jpg, you can see the Insecticons were sold as a 3-pack for $13.99!

I think they screwed up with classifying the various types of Transformers under the "Platinum" label. I think retailers figured demand would be the same for all "Platinum" figures, so when one Platinum figure sold well, they figured to order plenty of the next one, which happened to be a figure fewer people wanted. So, in turn they ordered fewer of the next figure, but then people happened to want that one. And so on...

I'd be curious to see a timeline of the release dates of the Transformers under the "Platinum" label.

Look at all the $200 Platinum releases at TRU... Trypticon was just another one.

Re: Platinum Trypticon...wtf happened?

Received an email this afternoon from a US-based online store where Trypticon's "on-sale" for $159.99 USD. And free US shipping. Cheaper than Amazon.ca...

I paid ~$178 Cadn. w/ free shipping when Trypticon was sold by amazon.ca instead of some market place sellers (scalpers??). How can $159.99 US be cheaper (159.99 US == 225.55 CAD)?

Re: Platinum Trypticon...wtf happened?

I won't cry if I never own the figure, but this is the first I can think of a Platinum toy being this hard to locate at a decent price. Other than that Omega Supreme some time ago.
